Driver’s education is an important aspect in the life of a new driver. Any driver can benefit from knowing the proper way to navigate the road, but new territory comes with new drivers. According to the “Center for Disease Control and Prevention,” motor crashes are the leading cause of death in the US resulting in over $470 billion in medical costs and the estimate for lives lost since 2022. Driver’s education is a salient, critical component in protecting the lives of new drivers and existing ones as well. Understanding the risk factors of driving is very vital. The world is mainly run by technology and it is rapidly evolving. We are constantly distracted by our phones whether we are driving or not. Distractions are something that will pull us away from safe driving very quickly. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration stated that texting while driving takes our eyes off of the for about 5 seconds, which is the equivalent of driving an entire football field at 55 mph with your eyes closed.
There are a number of ways that can reduce accidents, injury, or death if we take the proper precautions. There are certain features on phones that will send a text message letting the recipient know that you are driving, so you don’t even have to take your phone out. There is a certain feature in my car that will not allow me to touch anything on my infotainment system while the car is in motion, which will allow for less of a distraction. I feel as if this is one of the best features when trying to minimize obstruction. Cars that are more modern and up to date would be more beneficial to a driver, because of the many different features, like the automatic emergency brake, blind spot monitoring, and even active steering assist. Being aware and conscious of the road is a key component. There’s a saying that goes, “Drive for you and everyone around you,” because there are some rampant drivers out there who don’t take responsibility in safe driving. Road rage is a real thing, and cars can be replaced, but life cannot. Even if you have been driving for years, it’s still important to instill that essential knowledge to remain confident on the road.
A big misconception in life is thinking that it won’t happen to you , no matter how big or small. I was in the passenger seat of the car with one of my family members. We were sitting at the red light when all of a sudden, we were abruptly hit from behind. It was definitely a scary and nerve wracking encounter. The person who had hit us was very apologetic, but they did admit to being distracted. The man was visibly tired from work and he stated that he saw the green arrow to turn left, but we were in the lane to go straight and our light was still red. When your focus is not on the road or anything regarding safe driving, anything is a distraction, even if you are just sitting at a red light.
It is a progressive process when learning to drive and maintain the safety beliefs instilled in us as drivers. I know I like to “sight-see” when driving. I’m always looking at how nice a house is or how beautiful someone’s dog or baby is. Knowing that there are pedestrians and other drivers out on the road gives me a sense of compassion to know that I need to continue to remember the factors of driving and the consequences that can result if not careful. The features that are in my car definitely make it easier for me to stay less distracted and it also allows me to feel more confident when I’m on the road.
In conclusion, driver's education plays a crucial role in promoting road safety, fostering responsible driving habits, and reducing the risk of accidents. It equips individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate the roads confidently and safely. By ensuring that new drivers are well-prepared, we not only protect them but also contribute to the overall safety and well-being of our communities. Investing in driver's education is an essential step toward creating a safer driving environment for everyone.
