Safe driving is something I have always believed is important, but as I have gotten older and entered the healthcare field, I have realized how serious the consequences of reckless driving truly are. Every day, people make decisions behind the wheel that can change lives forever within seconds. Driver education is not only about learning how to operate a vehicle. It is about learning responsibility, awareness, patience, and understanding that every person on the road is someone’s family member, friend, or loved one.

Growing up in New York and now driving around busy areas on Long Island and in the city, I constantly see aggressive and distracted driving. People speed through yellow lights, text while driving, tailgate, or drive emotionally without thinking about the risks. Unfortunately, many drivers become too comfortable and forget that driving is something that requires full attention. I believe proper driver education can help reduce accidents and deaths because it teaches drivers how quickly situations can change and how important defensive driving is. Even if you are driving safely yourself, you also have to pay attention to the people around you who may not be.

As someone currently pursuing nursing school, my perspective on safety has changed even more over the past few years. Working toward a career in healthcare has made me more aware of how one moment can permanently affect someone’s health and future. Injuries from car accidents can impact a person physically, emotionally, and financially for years. Some people never fully recover. Experiencing physical pain myself recently has also made me realize how important it is to protect our bodies and health whenever possible. Many accidents are preventable if people slow down, stay focused, and make smarter decisions before getting behind the wheel.

One issue I believe contributes greatly to accidents is distracted driving. Phones are one of the biggest dangers on the road today. Many people think looking down for a few seconds is harmless, but those few seconds are enough for an accident to happen. Another major issue is driving while tired or emotional. People often underestimate how much stress, anger, exhaustion, or alcohol can affect reaction time and judgment. Driver education programs should continue teaching not only road rules, but also real-life decision making and the long term consequences of reckless behavior.

I have personally witnessed unsafe driving from both strangers and people around me. Sometimes it is excessive speeding, using phones while driving, or making risky lane changes without signals. Seeing this has made me more cautious myself. I try to practice defensive driving by keeping a safe distance, staying alert, avoiding distractions, and remaining patient even when other drivers are aggressive. I believe being a safe driver also means setting an example for others. Small actions such as wearing a seatbelt every time, not driving under the influence, and encouraging friends not to text while driving can make a difference.

In addition, I think communities and schools should continue investing in driver education programs because many young drivers underestimate the seriousness of driving. Some people see driving as routine or automatic, but it carries a major responsibility. Better education about distracted driving, drunk driving, speeding, and road safety could help reduce accidents and save lives. Public awareness campaigns and defensive driving courses are also important because learning safe habits should not stop after receiving a license.

Another important part of safe driving is understanding that accidents do not only affect the drivers involved. Families, friends, healthcare workers, and entire communities are often impacted as well. In healthcare, we are taught that prevention is always better than treatment, and I believe that applies strongly to driving safety. Many injuries and deaths can be avoided through education, awareness, and responsible choices. Even simple actions such as slowing down during bad weather, avoiding phones while driving, and staying calm during stressful situations can save lives. Safe driving is not about being perfect, but about consistently making careful and responsible decisions every time we get on the road.

Overall, I strongly believe driver education plays a critical role in reducing driving related deaths and injuries. Safe driving is about protecting not only yourself, but everyone around you. Through better education, stronger awareness, and personal responsibility, many accidents can be prevented. As someone pursuing a future in healthcare, I value safety, responsibility, and protecting others, and I believe those same values should always apply when we get behind the wheel. I hope to continue encouraging safe habits both on and off the road throughout my future career and daily life. This is why I  always leave extra early to school or appointments in case something inevitable comes up so that I don't need to unsafely drive to get there on time or feel anxious about it. I hope that many people understand my mindset and I will continue to spread word about it to the people around me and maybe over time spread the word to a larger population.
