Driving is a responsibility that many take for granted, yet its dangers are ever-present. Every year, an average of 34,000 people die in motor vehicle accidents across the United States, a statistic that surpasses the total number of American soldiers who perished in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan combined. These deaths are often preventable, making driver education and awareness crucial in reducing the number of fatalities on the road.
Driver education plays a fundamental role in reducing traffic-related deaths. Many drivers, especially younger ones, lack the awareness and experience to handle hazardous situations. Comprehensive driver’s education not only teaches the rules of the road but also instills safe driving habits and defensive driving techniques. If more states mandated robust driver’s education programs before issuing a driver's licenses, we could significantly reduce reckless behaviors such as speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving. Additionally, periodic refresher courses for drivers of all ages could reinforce the importance of road safety.
Every time I am on the road I wonder “did anyone else read the drivers ed handbook in addition to taking the comprehensive class? “
To lower the number of fatalities related to driving, we need to implement stricter enforcement of traffic laws, encourage safer road designs, and educate the public on the consequences of negligent driving. Stricter penalties for reckless behaviors such as drunk driving, speeding, and texting while driving could serve as deterrents. Road improvements, such as better lighting, clearer signage, and more pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, can also reduce accidents. Finally, campaigns promoting seatbelt use, proper following distances, and the dangers of distracted driving should be emphasized at every level of education.
Tragically, I have witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of motor vehicle accidents. In February 2022, I lost my dear friend in a horrific crash. He was supposed to turn 30 the following month, but ironically, I only learned his actual age after his passing. He always joked that he was 21, so no one really knew his real age. He had just become a father six months prior and had recently married. He was in his first year of marriage when his life was cut short.
The accident occurred on Florida’s 408 highway. After being involved in a minor crash, he stepped out of his vehicle to assess the damage. Another woman stopped to assist him, but before they could react, a speeding driver struck them both. They both lost their lives on the scene. The tragic irony is that he survived the initial accident only to be killed while trying to handle the aftermath. His son will never get to know the man who was so full of life and laughter, all because of one reckless driver -- one who wasn’t paying attention.
Another devastating loss came last year when my late cousin’s adopted daughter was killed in a separate accident. She had been involved in a single-car accident but survived. However, when she exited the vehicle to retrieve her belongings from the passenger seat, another vehicle struck her, sending her body across the interstate. It was a senseless tragedy that could have been avoided if drivers were more attentive and cautious.
These experiences have reinforced in me the importance of road safety and driver education. The pain of losing loved ones in preventable accidents is something no one should have to endure.
To become a better and safer driver, I am committed to practicing defensive driving, eliminating distractions, and advocating for responsible behavior behind the wheel. Defensive driving means anticipating potential hazards, maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles, and always being aware of my surroundings. I avoid using my phone while driving and encourage my passengers to do the same—because how many times have we been in a passenger seat and saw something the driver didn’t?
Additionally, I take it upon myself to educate my friends and family about safe driving habits. Whether it’s reminding someone to wear a seatbelt, discouraging speeding (God forbid you get someone two minutes later – speeding does not cut off much time in one’s ETA!), or calling out distracted driving. Small actions can make a big difference. I also support policies that promote safer roads and stricter penalties for negligent drivers.
Driving is one of the most dangerous activities we engage in daily, yet many fail to recognize the gravity of the responsibility. The tragic losses I have experienced emphasize the need for stronger driver education, stricter enforcement of traffic laws, and greater awareness of road safety. By making a conscious effort to be more responsible behind the wheel, we can prevent unnecessary deaths and ensure that more families do not have to suffer the pain of losing a loved one to reckless driving. Through education, awareness, and personal responsibility, we can make the roads safer for everyone.
We all want to make it home.
