Driving to See Another Day

As individuals we value each moment of our lives and try not to take it for granted even if our faulty decisions ultimately lead us to our downfall. We have this constant notion that because we are young that it’s somehow going to save us from an impending tragedy. However, when someone our age dies, we mourn and grieve but we are never really fazed by the fact that it could’ve been us. No matter what these accidents keep on becoming a constant reminder of tragedies we can’t help preventing.

The way in which we can best handle this problem is by speaking to young adults like myself about the damage that reckless driving can cause. Even though driving recklessly is a major issue, the group that is most impacted is teenagers. We see this in news stories, how yet another teen has lost their life. As a society, we think that this type of accident would never happen to someone in our family, but everyone does it. Everyone is guilty of driving a little tipsy after a night out or driving and replying to their friend, but no one ever finds it to be a problem because they never get hurt. In the Edgar Snyder and Associates website, it had been stated that “10 percent of all teen driving fatalities in 2016 involved distracted driving” we obviously know the source of what causes these deaths and yet we keep on making the same ignorant mistakes.

As someone who is still learning how to drive, I think it’s very important to not look at my phone while driving not only for my safety but also for those with me. Something that’s changed in the last few years that can help drivers be more aware of the road instead of their devices is Apple’s Do Not Disturb While Driving. This keeps drivers aware of the road instead of constantly being distracted by what’s going on with their phones. Since I do not yet drive, I find it important to always keep your eyes on the road because of the consequences it may have like getting in an accident. There have been times in the past in which I’ve been with members of my family and they’ve checked their phones on the road. However, this has never resulted in any of us ever getting hurt they know better than to be checking their phones while driving because they know the risk it can be.

As I am now reaching the age of adult hood, I know that as soon as I learn how to drive, I must become more responsible, and aware that I can hurt those around me. Most of all even if the repercussions aren't extreme, they can impact you economically. I'm not only accountable because when driving it's not only my life on the line but everyone on the road.
