Every year, millions of people globally die or are injured in traffic collisions. The statistics of today are slightly less unfortunate compared to that of last year, but regardless it’s a reminder of how dangerous the road can be. In the United States, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 18,720 people have succumbed to death or injuries, which is a 3.2% decrease in comparison to 2023. There of course are numerous contributing factors to these deaths including car malfunctions, weather, and the actions of other drivers. The right training and awareness can absolutely make a difference in the decline of accidents and the loss of lives.
Driver education is not simply about learning how to drive a car, it’s about knowing what risks and responsibility are involved when driving. A good driving education or school teaches its students how to respond in different driving situations, unexpected conditions, and how to lower the chances of the driver making mistakes. As stated by many sources, drivers who take drivers training have a lower chance of being in a car accident in comparison to drivers who taught themselves. For that reason, giving great quality schooling and education is a key step in lowering deaths that are due to car accidents.
While I haven’t experienced being in a car driving incident myself, I’ve seen first hand how it can mentally affect the lives of people in a devastating way. For example, about two years ago one of my older cousins Victoria, was in an accident where it was caused by a distracted driver. As my cousin was with her friend ( the driver) going to the park. Meanwhile, as they were crossing the light ( they had the right away) Victoria's friend overlooked the vehicle at the time, eventually leading to an accident that left Victoria’s friend with a broken left leg and left Victoria with some stitches on her right arm. Victoria and her friend went to physical therapy to get treatment and recover. And it wasn’t discovered until after that the driver was texting while driving. As I was listening to my cousin tell this story I can see how it took an emotional and mental toll on them individually. With this Victoria and her friend became more uneasy and worried when getting into a car, whether they were the passenger or the driver, and she says that memory still haunts her to this day
As I was listening to this story it came to me as more of a wake up call because it made it clear to me that distracted driving is not only an evident worldwide safety issue but there has yet to be a conversation about the emotional and personal toll on the individual, the family, and community. Witnessing my cousin telling her story and reliving the pain that she had endured was devastating because of the emotional disturbance and financial burdens the car accident had on her and her friend's family.
With the widespread danger that distracted driving brings, it’s very profound to use strategies that are going to be used to raise awareness and to stop future behaviors from occurring.
Some ideas that I feel are the most effective ways to lower the chances of car accidents is by teaching. Public Service campaigns that can be posted on social media in particular. With social media being a part of everyone’s lives, the campaigns can be spreaded through different social outlets to display a powerful message that brings awareness. These campaigns can have real-life stories of individuals who have gone through this circumstance and how it affected them, incorporating survivors and family who may have lost loved ones due to distracted driving. Videos that portray the end results of the crash and the long-term effects on the individuals may connect to other drivers and help them be more aware of the outcome of an evidently pure action such as looking at a message.
At the same time, educational programs for driving can touch on distracted driving, however, they don’t give adequate directions on how to stop oneself from being fully invested on their phone. In driver’s education there should be required lessons on the chances of being in a car accident, useful advice on ignoring distractions, and simulations that will further help students understand how hard it is to drive when there are distractions. It will also help the students understand how interruptions hinder their ability to react quickly.
As a further matter, in order for me to improve my driving skills and be a safer driver, I can take several steps to contribute to road safety. Firstly, when I drive I can make sure that I have no distractions, so I will take the conscious effort to ignore my phone while driving. When driving I try to maintain a good following distance with the cars in front of me. I always use my seatbelt and make sure others that are in the car with me do as well. Following the speed limit is also key for me when driving because it can reduce accident risks. From time to time as well I do check my car to make sure that it is in good condition.
Additionally, to better my driving skills I can teach others and influence them to be cautious drivers. A way I can do this is by being a prime example of what I preach. If my friends are driving unsafely, I will voice my opinion to them adopting safer driving behaviors. Whether it’s proposing that we take turns driving to avoid tiredness or simply telling a friend to have a seatbelt on. Little actions can go a long way in order to keep those in the vehicle safe. Furthermore, I will continue to learn more about the recent road safety procedures and technologies. For example, educating myself on the newest vehicle safety installments or refresher courses on safety driving will help me be more aware and alert when behind the wheel.
In conclusion, driver education is a key component to lower the risk of death due to car accidents. By providing drivers with the understanding and skills that's needed to navigate the difficulties of the roads, education plays a key role in ensuring that lives are saved. Moreover, as individuals we can subscribe to road safety by making wise choices when driving, influencing others to be responsible, and always being knowledgeable about good practices. Lastly, I believe that when working together, we can make sure that fewer lives will be lost and affected by these unfortunate events, and make the roads free from harm for everyone

My essay explores the key role that driver education can play in lowering car accidents. It touches on training skills that teach good safety habits, reducing accidents, incorporating stricter laws, advanced car safety technology, and campaigns that can raise awareness. This essay also discusses a personal experience that someone close to me has gone through emphasizing the mental and physical effects of distracted driving on the individual and the families involved. This essay is concluded with practical steps all drivers can do to be cautious drivers and influence them to be safer drivers.
