Driving is a privilege that comes with significant responsibility many people overlook. Whether on the professional level with Nascar and Formula 1 drivers, or just your everyday commute to and from work, it is a skill that requires precision, focus, and your complete and undivided attention. However, despite innovations in technology, road safety remains a global issue. Driver education is a critical tool in reducing inflated fatality numbers and creating a safer world for drivers. This essay explores the importance of driver education, strategies to mitigate driving-related deaths, my experiences with reckless driving and accidents, and steps to improve road safety within the community.
The Role of Driver Education in Reducing Fatalities
Driver education was created to equip us with the knowledge and ability to drive safely. Many driver education programs teach more than learning to drive a vehicle; they also teach defensive driving techniques, hazard recognition, road signs, and traffic laws. This information is essential for new drivers to learn and understand, as experience plays a significant role in how many accidents occur.
In countries where driver education is mandatory and more strict like in the United Kingdom, the rate of accidents tends to be lower. For instance, in many other European nations, earning a driver’s license in Georgia involves much more difficult testing, including mandatory classroom lessons, supervised driving hours, and exams. These initiatives ensure that new drivers are prepared for the many different situations they will have to evaluate and avoid on the road. By investing in driver education, societies can reduce reckless driving behaviors that are all too common such as speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving, which are leading causes of fatalities.
Strategies to Reduce Driving-Related Deaths
Reducing traffic casualties requires various approaches including stricter enforcement of laws, more advancements in vehicle technology, and an increase in public awareness. To increase prosecution, our authoritarian figures and legislators can create and strictly enforce new laws against speeding, drunk driving, and distracted driving with a stronger law-enforcement presence that can discourage and stop unsafe behaviors. For example, fines, license suspension, and mandatory rehabilitation can act as deterrents for offenders. With safety features like automatic braking, lane departure warnings, and collision detection becoming more common, technology has been proven extremely effective in preventing accidents by taking out human error to replace with computer accuracy. Manufacturers should work to make these technologies standard in all vehicles. Additionally, the government could run educational campaigns in mass media and schools emphasizing the danger reckless driving, texting, and driving under the influence can cause on the road. Using real stories from survivors and statistics can make these messages more impactful to those who don’t pay attention to the matter.
Personal Experiences with Reckless Driving and Car Accidents
Many people have experienced irresponsible driving behaviors and life-changing accidents firsthand. I am no exception. I can vividly recall two instances this year alone where my life was endangered by others on the road failing to pay attention and drive safely. The first of which was in the second semester of my senior year in high school a few months ago around Valentine’s Day. The accident took place on the highway next to Grady Hospital right before the highway exit leading to Interstate 20 going east. I had just left Atlantic Station with a close friend of mine and was driving home in my car when I approached heavy traffic. I, being an attentive driver, began braking to slow down and come to a stop while leaving enough space to not intrude on the driver’s space in front of me. On the other hand, the driver behind me failed to see seven lanes of traffic completely stopped, due to unsafe driving habits and sped into the back of my car. Due to this driver practicing high-risk driving habits, they not only totaled my car but rammed my vehicle into another causing a multi-car accident during rush hour in Atlanta.
Instances and experiences like these demonstrate why the need for a watchful eye and responsible driving practices are so important. In addition to these methods, performing routine maintenance on all vehicles to ensure they are roadworthy would also drastically increase safety and reduce the number of injuries, deaths, and accidents related to driving. During October, a few friends from college and I decided to take a weekend trip to the Perry Fair in Georgia. The first few hours of the 4-hour drive were simple and straightforward. There were no near accidents or signs of reckless driving. But, just as we were 15 minutes away from our destination, this accident had occurred. The car my schoolmates and I were riding in was following behind an 18-wheeler semi-truck at a safe distance. At first glance, it seemed like there was nothing wrong with the truck, but it suddenly slammed on the brakes and the driver in the car noticed a light bulb hanging by its electrical wires dangling from the brake lights had begun to dimly light up. Next, the tires on the truck locked up and created a thick curtain of tire smoke preventing our driver from seeing ahead while attempting to brake as quickly as possible. The semi-truck subsequently swerved into the right lane nearly hitting another vehicle and left us to unknowingly slam head-on into the rear of a black SUV that was completely stopped in the middle of the highway. Although none of us were injured after the airbags went off, we quickly realized that we could have died colliding with the rear end of the trailer, had the trucker also not been paying attention to the road in front of him. Had proper checks been done on the truck, and better driving habits been practiced by the occupants in the SUV, we could have safely made our way to the fair avoiding the accident altogether.
Steps Toward Becoming a Safer Driver
Becoming a better and safer driver requires the perfect combination of awareness, education, and proactive measures. Some steps that I use to keep myself and passengers safe are: avoiding distractions, following traffic laws, and regular vehicle maintenance. Before driving I always put my phone on "Do Not Disturb". This way I can completely focus on driving in order to anticipate and react to potential hazards effectively. If I get into a situation where having my phone is necessary, I will have my passenger take care of the issue or pull over to a gas station if I am alone to prevent endangering the drivers I share the road with. Equally important, I always make sure to use my turn signals including in parking lots, and maintain safe following distances. Additionally, due to my earning my ASE Certification in March, I got into the habit of checking my car and performing maintenance weekly. Ensuring that my car is in good condition ranges from inspecting brake pads, rotors, tires, lights, tubing, and other engine components to reduce the risk of mechanical failure while driving.
Conclusion
Driver education is a powerful tool for reducing traffic fatalities and creating safer roads for future drivers. By teaching the skills and knowledge needed for responsible driving, society can lighten the risks that come with inexperience and distractions. Along with stricter laws, technological advancements, and public awareness campaigns, driver education will lead to a safer future for all motor vehicle operators. As individuals, adopting safe driving practices and encouraging others to do the same can make a significant difference in keeping us all safer together. Together, these efforts can save lives and create a culture where we take accountability for our actions and care for others.
