There are around 6.75 million people in America who get into car accidents yearly. This is not something that is talked about enough. These accidents happen for many different reasons, it could be texting and driving, drunk driving, road rage, or many other different possibilities. Having a good education in driving can save your own life and can also keep others safe. Driving is a serious action and should not be taken lightly. It can be hazardous if you are fooling around or not knowing how to drive properly. Driving puts an enormous amount of responsibility on someone’s shoulder and this responsibility isnt something to mess around with. Even the slightest mistake can end up taking someone’s life.
This is a problem all around America. In some cities, there are hundreds of car crashes a day. Everything can happen so quickly, you wouldn’t even see it coming. There has to be a change, to have a safer environment to drive in. One solution is, raising the age limit for when kids are allowed to get their permits and driver’s licenses. The age varies throughout the United States but, the youngest a kid can get their driver's permit is at the age of 14. Then at the age of 16 kids, can drive with an actual driver’s license. As a country, we are letting young children, under the age of 18 be able to drive around freely. This is a lot of trust being put into these kids, to drive around safely. Generally kids can be reckless and not think about the dangers of driving, putting many lives at risk. Many times teen drivers end up speeding, texting while driving, and many other ways to get distracted. Which is causing many accidents to occur. It is not always teenagers who are the problem in these driving situations. Many adults can also make very impulsive and ignorant decisions when driving.
Having programs to increase driver knowledge should be implemented when getting your license. There are many traffic and driving laws that one needs to be aware of to navigate the roads responsibly. These programs will not only show how to properly drive but also teach driving etiquette. Such as proper behavior during construction zones, how to handle unexpected road hazards (large animals), lane etiquette, and how to drive in different types of weather. These are not talked about enough and they should be known, in case these situations were to ever occur. Taking these programs and “graduating” from them can make the roads in America 100 times safer to drive on. Giving kids their licenses to freely drive by themselves is having a lot of trust to keep themselves and everyone around them safe. Teaching kids the fundamental rule of driving can be a life saver. We need to make sure these young kids know how to drive safely before letting them roam around. Knowing that kids will go through programs to learn proper driving etiquette can make sure kids know how to handle themselves in certain situations.
I thankfully have never been in a car accident but that doesn’t mean I have never come close to having someone crashing into me. When you go out in the morning to go to work or heading to school, you think you will be safe on the road. You never know what will happen. There have been plenty of times that I have almost gotten hit. Many people don’t fully check their surroundings or make foolish little decisions. Those little mistakes can cause huge accidents. Taking more precautions like increasing the age to receive a permit and license or making sure people are put through driving programs, can make a massive impact on the road. Keeping more people safe from accidents.
Not only can the states we live in make it a priority to make these programs to teach driver education or by reducing the age limits, to have safer roads but we as individuals also have a responsibility. Making sure that we can take care of ourselves in the car will mean we are also taking care of the people around us. Limiting distractions, focusing on the road, can keep so many people safe. Sharing your driver’s knowledge with the people you know can make a difference. So next time you go out driving to the store, your house, picking up your brother, or anywhere you go. Just remember you are not just taking care of yourself in the car but everyone else driving around you. Educating yourself is the first step to making sure our roads are safe to drive on.
