: A Journey from Near-Death Experience to Road Advocacy
Driver education plays a pivotal role in reducing the number of deaths resulting from driving. Having personally experienced a near-death accident at a young age, I understand firsthand the critical importance of safe driving practices. I was on my way home from a basketball game in 8th grade and my older brother was driving me home. He was 17 at the time and was excited about driving. It was snowing and he was playing music loud and going much too fast. He took a turn without slowing down as much as he needed to, and we slid right into a telephone pole. The pole fell and hit the center of our car and indented the hood the of car landing right between my head and my brother’s head. We were both inches away from our heads being crushed. Despite the severity of the accident, I emerged unharmed, but the incident left an unforgettable mark, igniting within me a passion for promoting road safety- especially young teen driving.
As a driver's education instructor at Randolph High School for the past six years, I have witnessed the transformative impact of education on young drivers. Our program goes beyond teaching the rules of the road; it instills in students a deep understanding of the consequences of reckless driving and the importance of responsible behavior behind the wheel. We (Randolph’s Drivers Ed teachers) have strived to create a culture of safety and understanding in our driver’s education classes.
In regard to reducing driving-related deaths, I believe this requires a village of people. It takes teachers, parents, peers, and an educated self-understanding to make a lasting impact. There needs to be regular reminders from parents and teachers or excellent defense driving practices.
Legislation plays a crucial role in establishing and enforcing traffic laws that deter risky behaviors such as speeding, driving under the influence, and distracted driving. By advocating for stricter penalties and enhanced enforcement, we can incentivize compliance and hold accountable those who jeopardize the safety of others on the road.
Additionally, infrastructure improvements, such as better road design and signage, contribute to reducing the risk of accidents and minimizing their severity in the event of a collision. Investing in measures such as traffic calming devices, improved visibility at intersections, and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure enhances the safety of all road users.
Education remains a cornerstone in promoting responsible driving habits and fostering a culture of safety. By expanding driver education programs in schools and communities, we can reach individuals at a young age and instill in them the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed decisions behind the wheel.
Technological advancements offer promising opportunities to enhance road safety through innovations such as automated driving assistance systems, collision avoidance technologies, and vehicle-to-vehicle communication systems. I have my students do a assignment where they need to present a car safety feature. By leveraging these technologies, we can prevent accidents before they occur and mitigate their impact when they do.
My personal experience with a near-death car accident at a young age profoundly shaped my perspective on safe driving. Although the accident resulted in the total loss of the vehicle, I emerged physically unscathed but not mentally and emotionally. The emotional and psychological impact of the incident lingered, fueling my determination to promote road safety and prevent others from experiencing similar trauma.
Drawing from my personal experience and professional expertise as a driver's education instructor, I am committed to leading by example and empowering others to prioritize safety on the road. In addition to adhering to traffic laws and practicing defensive driving techniques, I actively engage in teaching and mentoring young drivers at Randolph High School and beyond. Lastly, I even help run a program called “Share the Keys” to the Randolph community where students and parents are to attend together. This is an excellent incentive that Randolph has set up, where students and parents need to attend this event for the child to be able to park in the senior parking lot at the high school. The program emphasizes safe driving practices and strategies for safe driving. For instance, not using your phone while driving, abiding by the GDL laws, the role that parents play in teen driving, and increased practice driving.
As an instructor and educator, I strive to impart not only technical skills but also a profound understanding of the responsibility that comes with operating a vehicle. By sharing my personal story and emphasizing the real-life consequences of reckless driving, I hope to inspire students to make responsible choices behind the wheel and become advocates for safe driving within their communities.
