Driver education entails the various training programs with regard to equipping a person with the rules of the road, proper driving etiquette, and standard skills for driving. A key objective is the reduction of accidents and fatalities due to making drivers, especially new drivers, able to be safe on the road under various circumstances. Numerous studies have reported that appropriate driver education can lower the accident rate of novice drivers since such drivers are more likely to take risks.
Young drivers, especially those in the age bracket between 16 and 24 years of age, are the most vulnerable, and such vulnerability has been well linked to inexperience and a tendency toward risk-taking. Inclusion of comprehensive driver education within the high school curriculum would go a long way in solving this pressing problem. These courses teach more than just driving; they instill an extra layer of importance on the decision-making process while driving safely. It is important, for instance, that topics of distracted driving, the importance of seatbelts, and the dangers of driving under the influence be included in making responsible drivers.
While drivers' education is a necessity, it is but a single component of a multi-faceted approach toward cutting the death toll on the highways. Much more can be done to make traveling the highways safer. Governments must institute and enforce much stricter laws concerning speeding, seatbelt use, and driving while intoxicated. Consistent enforcement serves as a deterrent to all other drivers to behave more safely. For instance, zero tolerance for driving and drinking by underage persons has helped reduce accidents involving alcohol greatly.
This education of the drivers should not stop at formal training; it has to be extended. Public awareness campaigns, for their part, can involve many more people, impressing that safe driving means a lot. Sharing real stories of consequences caused through reckless driving, using various media platforms, cultivates a safety culture. Other impacts on road safety could be furthered by improvements in vehicle technology: automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, and collision warning systems could prevent crashes. Encouragement of drivers to these technologies would further improve the safety of all road users.
Local communities can offer safe driving workshops and events. Working with the family and organizations to do so creates a support system that also reinforces the concept of safe driving. Many peer-to-peer education programs are helpful, especially with younger drivers, in encouraging others to practice safer driving habits. Graduated licensing systems allow new drivers to gain experience in a rather graduated manner. Often such schemes allow novice drivers to start with getting a learner's permit and progress to a provisional license with particular restrictions. This helps young drivers build their confidence and experience in a step-by-step way so they aren't overwhelmed.
A personal tragedy completely changed my view about driving safety. Though never having been in an automobile accident myself, I lost a good friend in one where she was the passenger. This terrible experience turned me into an aware driver, as it drove home the very important lesson that every decision made behind the wheel can have life-altering consequences.
Based on this tragedy, I have done several things in my effort to become a safer driver. First of all, I educate myself about safe driving practices and try to get as many defensive driving courses as possible. I believe that learning is continuous in becoming a responsible driver.
In addition, I try to influence my friends and family positively. When I'm driving in the car with others around me, I say to them, "Wear a seatbelt, never distract yourselves or the driver, and don't drive under the influence." I set an example with the hope of spreading safety among my peers.
In all, driver education forms one of the major components in bringing down road fatalities. In fact, equipping the new driver with all the necessary set of skills and knowledge will help in preventing accidents. The issue needs to be addressed from all directions, whether from the stringent laws, public awareness, or community involvement. My friend's death turned out to be a frequent reminder that life on the road may just be so fragile, and that motivated me to venture and see the need for safe driving practices and personal responsibility on the wheel. Together we can work towards a future where safe driving becomes the rule and not the exception.
