Driving while in Alaska

I learned about the importance of reducing risk while on my mission
in Alaska. We had a man assigned to help us become better defensive
drivers, especially as winter in Alaska could be dangerous. As he
helped us to see ways we could drive safer, accidents in my mission
decreased immensely. With over 50 vehicles we had gone more than 300
days at one time without an injury causing accident! The biggest
thing to reduce accidents is to drive slowly. It is okay to go a
couple miles under the speed limit to give yourself better time to
react and to make sure you are not riding anyone's tail especially if
they decide to stop suddenly. Another is to always look twice and
reduce distractions. If there is another person in car especially in
the passenger seat ask them to help you watch the road and point out
potential dangers. Making it so everyone is involved and responsible
for the safety of those in the car and those out on the road. I have
noticed that the times I have gotten into near accidents it has been
because of distraction. By reducing distractions, we can drive safer.
Somethings I can do to drive safer is to make sure music isn't being
a distraction. This may mean turning it down or off completely. And
to involve my family and friends who drive with me to keep a look out
and help me to remain focused on getting us to each destination safe!
