Educate yourself before driving

One of the key ways to reduce traffic-related deaths is through comprehensive drivers ed programs that focus on not just the technical skills needed to operate a vehicle, but also on promoting safe driving habits. Drivers should be taught how to react in emergencies, how to stay alert while on the road, and how to recognize the signs of impaired driving from other road users. These programs should also encourage ongoing education, such as offering refresher courses monthly to keep drivers sharp and up-to-date on road safety protocols and any new laws or rules. Through these programs, new drivers can be better equipped to handle the challenges of the road and make safe decisions.
In addition to improving education, stricter enforcement of traffic laws is essential. Laws regarding speed limits, seatbelt usage, texting while driving, and driving under the influence should be more rigorously enforced. For example, individuals who have been convicted of driving under the influence (DUI) should be required to have a breathalyzer device installed in their vehicle, ensuring they are sober before getting behind the wheel. Increasing public awareness about the dangers of impaired driving, distracted driving, and excessive speed is also crucial in reducing fatalities. Driving education can teach new drivers the importance of being cautious and considerate, but the government, law enforcement, and the public must also do their part to ensure that laws are followed and those who break them face consequences.
More visible law enforcement on the highways, particularly on stretches of road known for racing can also help detect dangerous driving. More police officers on busy roads or the thruways would make drivers think twice before speeding or participating in street races. Increased patrols and the use of technology, such as speed cameras, can help stop reckless driving and reduce accidents. If young drivers see that the consequences of unsafe behavior are severe and unavoidable, they may be more likely to adopt safe driving practices.
One of the most terrifying realities of being a new driver is knowing that there are others on the road who may not be as responsible. The fear of encountering a drunk driver is a constant concern, and it’s a fear that’s personal to me. In 2013, my pregnant Aunt Lynette was hit by a car when a drunk driver was speeding, going very fast through a red light, and turned very quickly smashing into my aunt who was walking in a crosswalk in Buffalo, New York. The accident left her with severe head injuries, including memory loss and the loss of half her skull. Tragically, her daughter, who is now paralyzed from the waist down, was also affected in terms of not being able to play certain sports she wants to, not being able to stand up and dance at school dances, not being able to just play at the park normally, this is all because someone was not educated on how important it is to not drink and drive. This incident has haunted our family and serves as a constant reminder of how devastating the consequences of drinking and driving can be. My aunt’s recovery was long and difficult, but she fought hard, although she tragically passed away in 2017, leaving behind a profound loss, along with her daughter who will never walk again. This real-life tragedy has shaped the way I view the importance of driving safely and responsibly.
Unfortunately, dangerous driving is a widespread issue. Many young people in the area, especially teenagers and young adults, seem unaware of how risky behaviors like street racing can be. I've known countless people who have lost their lives on the thruway from racing or not paying attention. The sense of invincibility and the desire to prove oneself behind the wheel can be deadly. These are all painful reminders of how easily lives can be lost due to a lack of awareness, sleep deprivation, or risky behavior.
As for me, I am committed to being a safer driver and helping others become safer on the road as well. I make sure to stay focused when driving, avoid distractions like texting or using my phone, and always obey the rules of the road. I also encourage my friends and family to be more mindful when driving and to speak up if they see someone engaging in unsafe behavior. It’s not just about our safety it’s about protecting everyone else on the road as well. Being a responsible driver means looking out for others, and that’s something we all need to remember.
In conclusion, driver education is ideal in reducing traffic accidents. Through proper education, law enforcement, and personal responsibility, we can make roads safer for everyone. The tragic events that have affected my family and friends serve as a constant reminder of how fragile life is and how important it is to drive safely. By promoting ongoing driver education, stricter enforcement of laws, and creating a greater presence of law enforcement on the roads, we can reduce the number of lives lost each year. If we work together with drivers, law enforcement, and the public we can make our roads safer for everyone.
