Many steps have been taken to reduce the number of collisions on the road. Reminders to only use hands-free devices, take breaks when tired, take precautions when conditions are poor, signal your intentions, and not speed. There are also many rest spots along the highway where drivers can pause to relax. Car companies are starting to put driver awareness sensors in their cars so they can indicate when the driver is not aware of the road and when they should take a break. Having a more widespread dangerous conditions course would make driving much safer. With a dangerous conditions driving course, drivers could learn how to drive in conditions like heavy snow, freezing rain, a downpour with hydroplaning, poor visibility, and other hazards. Another bonus is that this course could show drivers how to put chains on their tires, how to change a tire, and what to do if caught in a snowbank.
There was a time when I was on vacation in Huntsville for a week, and an intoxicated driver hit our car on the highway. On our way home, I had my Starbucks drink in the cupholder next to me, and I was playing a Sudoku. Suddenly, I heard my mom say,“ Oh my,” and as I looked up, all I could see was the front grill of an F-150 in front of us. We were hit head-on, we spun 90 degrees around and into the barrier on the other side of the road. Our car’ left wheel was crushed into the engine bay, and oil and windshield washer fluid were leaving out onto the road. Their car had a wheel torn off, lying on the road a few feet away. The truck was up the hill quite far, as they may have kept driving. My family consisted of my mom, my stepdad, and me. We all walked out of the car on our own and after a minute or two we started directing the traffic around the cars as we were on a corner. The ambulance came shortly after and took my mom and me to the hospital, where we received X-rays and an ultrasound. My stepdad came shortly after and was checked as well. After being discharged from the hospital, the police officer told us about what had happened and that the driver was intoxicated and at fault.
As an individual, checking the weather before leaving, observing road conditions, and slowing down at night are some things that can be done to have a safer drive. Learning how your car operates in poor road conditions is also extremely important. Knowing how to put chains on your tires, how to turn traction control off, and how to turn on the differential locking can be important for getting unstuck from the snow. This information could be a very impactful addition to the current curriculum as many people do not have the skill set required. Choosing a car with more ground clearance is optimal with lots of snow because it will not cause you to get stuck as easily. Not having wide tires on your car also helps with snow as skinny tires can cut through the snow, sticking to the road, instead of sliding on top of it. Most importantly, being aware of your skills while driving is important, if you do not have lots of experience driving in the snow, or other poor road conditions, it is best to not drive.
Driver education training is a beneficial tool to help drivers of all ages improve their skills. Road signs are another tool that can help drivers stay focused on the road. As an individual, you can also have a safer drive, by equipping your car appropriately, and knowing how to operate your vehicle in poor conditions.
