It
all happened at the blink of an eye. One moment I was calmly driving
to work, and the next moment I was swerving off the road. I was hit
from behind and launched in to someone’s front yard. My turned 180
degrees and narrowly missed a large oak tree. I was a victim of
distracted driving. Miraculously, I was uninjured, except for some
spinal whiplash that caused minor pain for less than three days.
Since the accident, I oftentimes wonder if increased awareness
regarding the dangers of the road would have altered what happened
that day. What if thousands of lives could be saved? What if death in
motor vehicle accidents could be prevented? The good news is that
this death can be lessened and prevented with drivers ed.

Driver’s
education is an important part of protecting people on the road. In
2012, over 30,000 people died in motor vehicle crashes. This
horrifying statistic is what spurs my personal desire to see driver’s
education implemented everywhere. As someone who has partaken in a
drivers ed course, I can attest that it is crucial to
revealing the dangers of the road and equipping people with safety
skills. Such a course significantly reduces the risk of a crash, as
taking the course can give you a new perspective on the
responsibility of driving. There are many steps that can be taken to
reduce the number of driving-related deaths, but the one most
important to me is implementing driver’s everywhere. Drivers ed
is proven to work and by ensuring that its influence reaches as many
people as possible will further increase its success. By expanding
awareness of the incorrect ways of driving and the subsequent perils,
we can prevent further death due to lack of knowledge and
understanding.

I,
too, can personally take steps to ensure road safety and good driving
habits in my own life, as well as help others do the same. I always
strive to drive without using my phone, except for using it as a GPS.
This allows me to focus on the road. I can encourage my friends to do
the same. The same goes for speeding, obeying stop lights, and paying
attention to road signs. The road can be dangerous, but with driver’s
education and proper acknowledge meant of laws and the responsibility
of driving, lives can be saved. People will not only keep themselves
safer, but they will keep other people safe as well. This is why I
believe that education results in preservation.
