Driver’s education teaches you many things about the road that are crucial in reducing driving–related deaths. The most important thing that drivers ed teaches you is knowledge of traffic laws because educated drivers are more likely to understand and follow traffic laws, which helps prevent accidents. They also teach defensive driving techniques so that drivers can anticipate and react to potential hazards quickly and more effectively. Safe driving habits is a very big and long lesson in drivers ed because it is one of the more important things that are crucial for a safe driving environment. Drivers Ed teaches proper speed management and the importance of avoiding distractions such as cell phones, that have been known for causing lots of crashes. The other things that you learn in drivers ed are risk awareness and emergency response and those are very important, especially if people are impaired by drugs or alcohol. Impaired people can’t respond quickly to an emergency situation because they aren’t fully aware of the risks going on around them. Drivers ed provides thorough training so that individuals leave their classes with the skills and knowledge needed to drive more safely, thereby reducing the likelihood of accidents.
The first step that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving is enhanced road safety like the infrastructure, improving road design, installing better signage, and keeping the roads in good condition. An example of how these might help is if trees are blocking important signage like stop signs, drivers are more likely to miss these or see them late and run the stop sign. This can be prevented through regular maintenance and checks. Strict enforcement of traffic laws is another thing which also includes enforcing laws related to speeding, promoting seat belt use and impaired driving. Often times, just the presence of law enforcement will cause a driver to be more cautious and observe traffic laws more closely. We should also encourage vehicle safety features such as automatic breaking, lane departure warnings and adaptive cruise control. While these alone are not enough to prevent accidents, they can minimize risk. We especially need to educate drivers on how dangerous impaired driving and distractions are in drivers ed classes and teach them ways to avoid driving drunk or with a drunk driver. We need to improve emergency response systems like enhancing the efficiency of emergency medical services to ensure quick response and effective treatment for accident victims. The biggest thing that causes accidents in this world is driving under the influence of alcohol or drug abuse and one way that we can improve that is support for mental health and substance abuse programs. We need to address the issues such as substance abuse and mental health problems that can contribute to risky driving behavior causing lots of deaths we hear of today. Implementing these steps collectively can significantly lower the number of deaths related to driving.
I have had the experience of being in a car accident. As a six-year-old, my mom, sister and I were in the car and she was pregnant at the time with my younger sister. We were driving home taking a left turn into our neighborhood during rush hour when a small black car came speeding up the turn lane. We did hit the car and there was a lot of damage to both cars. Fortunately, everyone in our car was okay, I only got a small rope burn on my neck from the seat belt but that was it, things would have been a lot worse if I didn’t have one on. My mom and sister were fine, but we all got checked by the police. The other driver in the accident had minor injuries. I am not sure if the driver was under the influence, but speeding was a contributing factor. I don’t know any of my friends or family who drive recklessly, but there are people at my school who don’t have their license and choose to drive anyway.
To be a better and safer driver and help others to do the same, I can follow the traffic laws like the speed limits, traffic signals, and signs. Avoiding distractions, such as staying focused on driving instead of using my phone or eating makes me a better and safer driver because lots of accidents that happen today are caused by people being on their phones or eating instead of paying attention to what’s happening in front of them. Maintaining my car and making sure all the things that need to be working while driving are working properly like lights, brakes and tires. Not having working lights can be lethal if you’re driving at night and flat tires are very bad for your car as well as brakes that don’t work. Being aware of my surroundings is the most important one and people who are under the influence can’t do that. I can make sure that I am anticipating the actions of other drivers and that I’m prepared to react to potential hazards. I can always make sure that I am using my turn signals properly. Some accidents happen because people choose not to use their turn signals while driving and end up turning into other cars causing an accident because other cars didn’t know that they were planning on changing lanes or turning there. I can make sure that I am always keeping a safe distance from other cars, so it leaves space for easy stopping time. I can learn how to adjust to weather conditions like driving cautiously in adverse weather conditions like rain, snow, and fog. I can also make sure to educate others on safe driving and lead by example. If I see unsafe drivers, I should report them for the safety of others.
