I have been involved in an accident that was caused by distracted driving. A friend and I were driving to a concert in Los Angeles. I remember this incident vividly. I remember everything to the song we were playing to the shirt I was wearing. We were stuck in stop and go traffic. My friend, who was the driver, accelerated while turning up his radio and unfortunately hit the bumper of the car in front of us. This caused a domino effect of accidents, damaging about four other cars. My friend’s ego and car were totaled. The car was in such bad shape that the sharif had to stop ongoing traffic to escort us to safety. The cars in front of us were all trucks, therefore they withheld major damage. On the other hand, my friend’s old Toyota was completely destroyed, with liquids pouring out of the car’s engine bay. It was a very eye-opening and traumatic experience. Thankfully, we were not going too quickly or we could have seriously injured ourselves and others.
After going through that traumatic experience I always try to cation everyone I come in contact with to put their phones away and give the road your full attention. Both, my life and their life are at risk while driving distracted. This topic should not be taken lightly. I am irresponsible on occasion but I will put my phone down, turn down the music, and give the road my full attention. I will lead by example and show others my priority to drive safely. By being an exemplary example, others will naturally follow. When I see others driving distracted or driving irresponsibly I will not remain silent and will let them know the repercussions of their actions. This will hopefully deter them from continuing their habits. We as a society must evaluate our actions, spread awareness, and support each other in order to create a safer driving environment.
