Driver education plays a major role in reducing the number of deaths caused by driving-related incidents. It helps new drivers develop essential skills, such as defensive driving, hazard recognition, and understanding road laws. Well-structured driver education programs teach the dangers of distracted driving, speeding, and driving under the influence, ultimately promoting safer driving habits and reducing the risk of accidents.
Traffic laws are another precaution put in place to protect drivers, along with pedestrians, but stricter enforcement is necessary to ensure people listen. Speeding, or running a red light contributes to accidents. By increasing the penalties for traffic violations, or even implementing more cameras, people would be much more cautious driving. Stricter laws surrounding DUI can also be placed to avoid possible repeat offenders. Better road conditions are another solution that could be put into effect to improve driver safety. Unclear road markings, and potholes both lead to accidents. There needs to be campaigns surrounding repairing roads, and adding better signage. Safer intersections can be created by expanding pedestrian crossings, and fixing dedicated bike lanes can increase road safety.
For a person to become a safer driver on the road, they can take many precautions. Most of these might seem like common sense, however they are most commonly forgotten or have been normalized. Avoiding any distractions is the simplest way to continue to follow the law, meaning phones, or even other people in the car. Leading by example, while corny, is a forgotten art. Many teenagers, as well as young adults, think it’s cool to show off. Social media campaigns and educational programs should be implemented that emphasize the dangers of speeding, and general reckless driving as young drivers underestimate the consequences. Seminars or even workshops can be hosted on safe driving practices. It is required for teenagers to complete a driver’s education course before obtaining a permit or license, but the quality varies. By requiring a standardized or even more rigorous program, it would ensure that new drivers are prepared for real-world situations rather than taking the test, and then forgetting everything after. Adding onto this, advanced driving courses could be made more accessible for drivers to further improve their skills and overall awareness.
An example of a forgotten safety concern when driving is how to deal with various weather conditions. Rain, snow, and fog all create hazardous conditions that require extra caution. Many accidents occur due to drivers not being prepared to deal with this. This is definitely one of the areas that better public education needs to be implemented and encouraged. Vehicles can be equipped with proper tires, or even the proper windshield wipers to improve safety. Much like fixing roads, however, cities can invest in better drainage systems to prevent flooding and lead to less skidding or hydroplaning. Cities can also invest in better lights around more rural areas, where speeding is a major issue.
I am placing emphasis on the issue of driving education, as there are many times I have been in a car with friends where they decide to show off quickly, speeding up once a light turns green, or drifting around a corner. It’s a scary situation to be in once you realize how fast it takes for this to go wrong. Losing control for even a second could quickly ruin lives. Many people do not realize how important they are when it comes to driving people or friends around. Every time someone gets into a car with another person driving they are trusting them with their life. It will always be the duty of the driver to drive to their best ability.
Lowering the number of vehicles on the road at a time can also help with lowering overall accident rates. Public transportation, or carpooling can help to minimize congestion on the road, as well as the collision rate. By campaigning for efficient public transit systems, people would be provided with different options. Workplaces can also work towards lowering the number of vehicles by incentivizing their employees to carpool or even use public transportation as well.
Reducing driving-related accidents is a problem that requires various approaches. Focusing on driver education, and enforcing stricter traffic laws are both major contributors to a safer driving environment overall, but additionally, it is up to individuals to take personal responsibility for driving habits to protect others. Society can work towards reducing the number of lives lost to distracted driving each year, through public awareness. Safe driving should remain a priority, and even small efforts can have significant life-saving outcomes.
