Every Choice Behind the Wheel Matters

2026 Driver Education Round 1

Every time we get behind the wheel, we make a choice. We can choose to drive with patience, awareness, and responsibility, or we can allow distractions and poor decisions to put ourselves and others at risk. Driving is something many people do every day, and because it becomes such a normal part of life, it can be easy to forget how much responsibility comes with it. Safe driving is not just about following traffic laws or avoiding a ticket. It is about recognizing that every decision we make behind the wheel can affect someone else's life.
Although I have never caused a serious accident, I have experienced firsthand how quickly unexpected situations can happen while driving. I have hit deer while driving, something that is unfortunately common in Michigan, and I have also had my parked car hit by another driver. These experiences showed me that accidents can happen in ways we do not always expect. Even when a driver is paying attention and making responsible choices, there are still situations outside of our control. However, these experiences have taught me that being prepared, staying alert, and driving responsibly can make a difference when unexpected circumstances occur.
After experiencing collisions with deer, I became more aware of how important it is to stay cautious in certain driving conditions. Living in Michigan means drivers have to be prepared for changing weather, icy roads, snow, rain, and wildlife crossing roadways. Deer are especially common during certain times of the day, such as dawn and dusk, and they can appear suddenly with little warning. These moments reminded me that driving requires constant attention. A driver cannot assume the road will always be predictable. Being aware of your surroundings and adjusting your speed when necessary are important parts of preventing accidents.
One of the greatest threats to road safety today is distracted driving. With technology being such a major part of everyday life, it can be tempting to check a phone, respond to a message, or look at a notification while driving. However, even a few seconds of distraction can have serious consequences. A vehicle can travel a significant distance in the time it takes to glance at a phone, and during those seconds, a driver may not notice another vehicle, a pedestrian, an animal, or a sudden change in traffic. Before I start driving, I make sure my phone is put away and avoid checking notifications until I have reached my destination. No message, phone call, or social media update is worth risking my safety or the safety of others.
Responsible driving also means remaining calm and patient. Every driver makes mistakes. Someone may miss a turn, drive slower than expected, hesitate at an intersection, or make another decision that affects traffic. It is easy to become frustrated, but reacting with anger or aggression only creates a more dangerous environment. Road rage and aggressive driving can turn small mistakes into serious accidents. Instead, drivers should give others patience and understanding because everyone on the road is trying to safely reach their destination. A simple act of courtesy can make the roads safer for everyone.
Another important part of safe driving is understanding that responsibility does not end when you leave your own driveway. Drivers have a responsibility to their passengers, other drivers, pedestrians, and their communities. This includes wearing a seatbelt, following speed limits, maintaining a safe following distance, avoiding distractions, and making thoughtful decisions. Many accidents happen because someone believes a risky choice will only affect them, but the reality is that one decision can impact many people. Families, friends, emergency responders, and healthcare workers can all be affected by the consequences of unsafe driving.
As a Kinesiology student pursuing a career as a Physician Assistant, I have gained a deeper understanding of how serious the consequences of motor vehicle accidents can be. In healthcare settings, professionals see the physical and emotional effects that injuries can have on patients and their families. Many injuries treated in hospitals are caused by preventable accidents. While healthcare workers provide important treatment and help people recover, preventing injuries before they happen is always the best outcome. This has strengthened my belief that safe driving is not just a personal responsibility but a responsibility we all share.
My experiences have shown me that accidents can happen even when someone is being careful. However, they have also reinforced the importance of controlling the things we can control. We can choose to put away distractions, stay focused, adjust to weather conditions, and treat other drivers with respect. We may not be able to prevent every accident, but responsible choices can reduce risks and help protect lives.
Safe driving is ultimately an act of respect. It shows respect for passengers who trust us with their safety, families who want their loved ones to return home, other drivers sharing the road, and the emergency responders and healthcare workers who assist after accidents occur. Every responsible decision behind the wheel contributes to safer roads and stronger communities.
Driving is a privilege that comes with a great deal of responsibility. Each time we start our vehicles, we have the opportunity to make choices that protect ourselves and those around us. By remaining attentive, patient, and prepared, we can help create a culture where safety comes first. A single responsible decision may seem small, but together, those decisions have the power to save lives.
