Forget Driver Responsibility, Government Action is Necessary

After
being rear-ended at 60+ mph and sitting in cars with friends
constantly using mobile devices, driver safety has become of personal
importance and in modern society with increasing death rates, actions
must be taken to reduce the daily risks of personal transportation.
Despite the irrational fear of planes, there have been constant
strides in increasing the safety of these methods of travel, however,
the lack of fear for drivers has fostered the continuous growth of
death as a result of accidents. There must be greater regulations on
traffic laws, increased regulation on driver assistance in production
vehicles by government policy, and more advertisements exposing the
dangers of driving without responsibility.

Increasing
accident rates and driver deaths has not had the necessary impact on
society that it should have. The use of cellphones while driving has
not decreased as it should have, but in recent years, it appears that
it has actually been increasing despite advertisements and government
policy. There have been recent updates to government laws to prohibit
this but it has had little effect on limiting their use and
preventing cellphone-related deaths. It has become increasingly
required that there become more strict regulations, more wide-spread
enforcement of these laws and greater fines on the use of personal
devices while operating motor vehicles.

Personal
responsibility on drivers has not had any effect in reducing the
driving-related deaths in the US. In other countries there is greater
regulation on car safety and drivability when compared to the US
which accounts for the lesser number of deaths related to accidents
in other nations. There are thousands of cars on the road without the
necessary accident precautions or safety mechanisms and thus, there
should be more government mandated checks on personal vehicles to
make sure that every car is road safe and does not pose a threat to
other drivers. In Germany and Australia, there are required checks on
car modifications to make sure that it still remains safe but in the
US a person can freely modify a car without repercussion even if it
puts all other drivers in harms way.

More
government regulation on safety and further enforcement of cell-phone
policy would greatly reduce the risk of driver death on the road in
the US. My previous experiences with distracted drivers makes me a
great proponent of government on restriction despite the
anti-government sentiment in the US, however, many people will soon
realize that these safety precautions would greatly reduce the risk
of vehicle injuries in the United States.
