Steps to Reduce Driving-Related Deaths
To lower the number of driving-related deaths, I believe improvements must be made to America's driver education programs. These programs should incorporate more real-world driving scenarios and stress the importance of defensive driving techniques. Additionally, encouraging the use of public transportation could be beneficial. If incentives, such as a rewards system, were introduced, more people might opt for public transportation instead of driving, ultimately reducing the number of cars on the road and, consequently, the number of accidents.
The rise in driving fatalities is largely attributed to the increasing use of phones behind the wheel, as distractions from texting, browsing, and app usage take drivers' attention away from the road. A potential solution to this growing issue is the implementation of a mandatory “Do Not Disturb While Driving” mode, which would allow only emergency contacts to reach the driver while disabling all other phone functions, including apps and internet browsing. This feature could be developed through a partnership between vehicle manufacturers and phone companies, ensuring that the technology seamlessly integrates with vehicles to promote safer driving habits. With both industries prioritizing consumer safety and innovation, there is little reason why they wouldn't collaborate on a change that could significantly reduce accidents and save lives
However, accidents will still occur due to human error. Since eliminating all accidents is impossible, the integration of technological advancements in vehicle safety is vital. Car manufacturers should continue to develop and implement enhanced safety features, such as automatic braking systems, lane departure warnings, and collision avoidance technology. These innovations can help prevent accidents and save lives.
Personal Experience with an Automobile Accident
Last year, my daughter and I were involved in a car accident caused by a distracted driver. The individual was on their phone and rear-ended my vehicle before immediately driving off. While my daughter and I were left shaken, I could not help but think about how this young driver might have reacted if they had seen the emotional and physical toll their actions had caused. Perhaps if they had been more educated on the dangers of distracted driving or witnessed the aftermath firsthand, they would have taken more care in the future. This experience reinforced my belief in the need for stricter enforcement of distracted driving laws and more thorough driver education.
I believe that had this young man who hit us, had the “do not disturb” function mentioned before, that we would not have been in an accident that day. No, it was not fatal, but the effects it had on my five year old with an anxiety diagnosis for over a year with night terrors and fear of the car could have been avoided.
Becoming a Safer Driver and Helping Others
On a personal level, I can take steps to be a better and safer driver by making small but impactful changes. One of the most effective actions I can take is to leave my house five minutes earlier when heading to my destination. Rushing often leads to feeling frazzled, which decreases my awareness of my surroundings and increases the risk of an accident. By allowing myself extra time, I can drive more cautiously and attentively.
Additionally, I can set an example for others by avoiding distractions while driving and encouraging friends and family to do the same. Promoting responsible driving habits and spreading awareness about the consequences of reckless driving can have a ripple effect, inspiring others to prioritize safety on the road.
Reducing traffic fatalities requires a multi-faceted approach, including enhanced driver education, technological advancements in vehicle safety, and increased use of public transportation. My personal experience with a car accident has reinforced the importance of responsible driving and the need for improved education on road safety. By making conscious efforts to be more aware and proactive, both individually and as a society, we can work towards a future with fewer driving-related deaths.
