Distracted driving is a serious issue that affects my life everyday, especially living in Milwaukee where car crashes are very common. Everywhere I go I hear about accidents caused by people texting, speeding, eating, or not paying attention to the road. It makes driving feel dangerous even for careful people. As a teenager preparing for adulthood and independence, distracted driving worries me because one small mistake can change someone's life forever. In my city, reckless and distracted driving has become such a major problem that many families constantly fear for their safety. My own mom is scared to let me drive because she knows that even if I drive responsibly, I cannot control the actions of other distracted drivers around me. Distracted driving includes anything that takes a driver's attention away from the road. This can include changing music, using GPS, eating, or talking a lot with your passenger. Many people underestimate how dangerous these certain actions are. Looking down at a phone for just a few seconds can cause someone to miss a stop light, hit another car or injure a pedestrian. In Milwaukee dangerous driving behaviors happen so often that many people no longer feel safe driving across the city. There are constant stories on the news about crashes involving speeding or distracted drivers. Seeing these stories makes me more nervous about driving because I know accidents can happen instantly. Living in Milwaukee has made me very aware of how common reckless driving is. Drivers often run red lights, weave through traffic, or stare at their phone. while driving. Sometimes I notice driver's not even looking at the road when cars around them are braking. This creates fear for everyone sharing the road. Even riding as a passenger can be stressful because you never know when another driver might make a careless decision. Intersections especially feel dangerous because many crashes happen when distracted drivers feel to stop in time. Because crashes are so common in my city, distracted driving feels personal instead of just being a problem discussed in school or on television because one day I could be one of those victims Prom night is another time when distracted and reckless driving becomes an even bigger concern. Prom is supposed to be one of the happiest and most exciting nights for high school students but many families worry about safety more than the event itself. Teen drivers may become distracted by friends in the car, loud music, phones, excitement, or late night driving. This often happens during prom night because it is such a once in a lifetime event Some students also make dangerous choices involving alcohol or speeding after prom celebrations parents spend the entire night hoping their child returns home safely. My mom especially worried about prom night because so many accidents involving teenagers happen during special events when emotions and distractions are high. Instead of only focusing on dresses, pictures and memories, families also have to think about the dangers waiting on the road and constantly worry if their child is gonna be a part of that 33% of high school student car crashes. My mom's fear about letting me drive comes from wanting to protect me. She knows I can follow the rules, wear my seat belt, and stay focused but she also knows distracted drivers are unpredictable every time I leave the house she worries that another driver could be texting or not paying attention. As a Parent that fear is understandable because accidents can happen even when someone does everything correctly. Many parents in Milwaukee are the same way because crashes are so frequent in the city. My mom often reminds me to stay alert, avoid distractions and never assume other drivers are paying attention. Her concern has taught me that driving is not something to take lightly. Distracted driving also affects people emotionally and mentally. Knowing how dangerous roads can be creates anxiety for drivers, passengers, and families. Sometimes people feel nervous every time they get behind the wheel because they have seen or experienced access before. Families who lose loved ones to distracted drivers often suffer permanent emotional pain. Even survivors of crashes may struggle with fear or trauma afterward. These emotional effects show that distracted driving impacts much more than traffic or transportation; it affects their entire communities and Families. Communities can help reduce distracted driving by increasing awareness and encouraging safer habits. Schools can educate students about the consequences of distracted driving by the age of 15 before they begin driving regularly. Parents can set examples by avoiding phone use while driving themselves. Police officers can also enforce traffic laws more strictly to discourage than just behaviors. Most importantly, drivers must personally choose to stay focused and responsible. no text message, phone calls, or distractions are more important than a human life. As a childcare teacher Toddlers are also deeply affected by distracted driving because they are completely dependent on adults to keep them safe. A careless driver can cause crashes that injure young children who cannot protect themselves. Many toddlers ride in car seats every day while parents drive through busy streets in Milwaukee. Families fear that one distracted driver could permanently change a child's life through serious injuries, emotional trauma, or even the loss of their loved ones In the end distracted driving affects my life deeply because I live in Milwaukee Wisconsin, where crashes happen far too often. Seeing reckless driving in my community makes me nervous about driving and reminds me how dangerous distractions can be. Prom night also increased worry for my family because teen drivers may become distracted during such an exciting event. My mom Mom's fear about letting me drive shows how much distracted driving impacts families emotionally. Even responsible drivers can become victims of someone else's careless choices. Distracted driving is not just a personal problem; it is a community issue that threatens safety, happiness, and everybody's day to day lives. By staying focused and encouraging safer driving habits people can help make roads safer for everyone.
