How
Driver Ed Could Have Saved My Aunt

Many
people think that drivers training is just a minor precaution that we
take when learning how to drive. Many don’t find it necessary at
all. You learn to go slower when the roads are wet and how to park
your car on a hill. What isn’t highlighted enough is the section
where drivers ed teaches you not to drive under the influence.
Through that section everyone just blows through it saying “yeah
yeah don’t drive drunk whatever.” In reality my life would be
different if a certain individual had learned that section and
actually digested what it meant. If he had taken the steps to read
about how alcohol affects your driving abilities and had read all the
other transportation services that could have taken him home, my aunt
would be alive today. My aunt was hit by a drunk driver when she was
in her 20s. A couple months before I was born. I barely missed
getting to meet her. The person who found her was a vet that pulled
over on the side of the road because her body was so mangled she
thought it was an animal that had been hit. The after effects of this
tragedy still affect my family today. My grammy, her mother has had
mental issues ever since and my dad is always anxious anytime we go
on a walk and the sun is setting. He is always shouting to not wear
dark clothes outside and to put on a lighter shirt. I believe that
before people should be allowed to drive they must understand the
after effects their reckless driving could have. They need to hear a
real story from real people. They need to visualize my grandma
grieving her daughter who was gone too soon and my father who has
been nervous and anxious ever since losing his sister. And they need
to think of me, how they could take away someone's family member for
years to come. She was the only extended family I could have had. Now
she's gone due to just one person disregarding Drivers Ed.
