It
was the final soccer game of my season and I was leaving my house
late. I remember split images of the car going at 170 km/hr as I
nervously watched the speedometer from the passenger’s seat and all
it took was the slight shift to the right of a small, red car for my
views on speeding to entirely change. After the collision, the car I
was in completed three revolutions in the air before landing on its
roof.

I
live in a country (Egypt) where it is considered normal to experience
at least two car fatalities per week on my way to school. A country
where the driver’s license test does not actually go out on the
road and pertains no written test. In essence, the drive to school is
one filled with uncertainty regarding whether I will actually make
it.

I
recognize that I want to change this issue, advocating for safer
driving, and employing my mechanical engineering passion to invent
safer vehicles. Unsafe driving is the cause of over a million deaths
per year and is a crucial issue we must tackle.

My
interest in mechanical engineering makes me confident that after I
complete my Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees, I will
be qualified to take on the challenge. I envision myself changing
this problem through heading an organization dedicated to, and
capable of, understanding what others have not understood, advancing
the current technology, and revolutionizing the industry.

To
practically tackle this issue, we need to establish a universal
driver’s license test which is comprehensive enough to deter lazy
and irresponsible drivers from becoming drivers. Furthermore, more
regular, random patrol checks are required to ensure that every
driver on the road actually has a driver’s license. The
aforementioned, coupled with a wide awareness campaign explaining to
the general public the issue of driving accidents will undoubtedly
decrease the number of car accidents per year worldwide.
