The steps that can be taken to reduce the various deaths related to car accidents can include many varied factors. Paying attention to the road and the cars driving around you is a major part of not getting into an accident. Some may even say that it is common sense, but it is so easy to get distracted. Cell phones are the number one distraction on the road that cost many people their lives. They hinder many from fully keeping eyes on the road and thus eliminating the use of cell phones while driving will absolutely reduce the car accident death rate significantly. Another effort to reduce this outrageous statistic is to have the ability to predict or perceive what the other cars around you may do next. For example, if another car is speeding up, assume they want to get over and slow down, so they have the ability to do so. By knowing their next move, it gives you the choice of your next move. In this way, an accident can be avoided by knowing the ways of the vehicle around you. To add on, while watching the other cars on the road beside you, make sure to focus on your driving and what you are doing. Driving is like multitasking and if you cannot focus on more than one thing at once for the safety of yourself and those around you, it could cost a life. It is especially important to use your signal lights while driving so no one runs into the back of you or vice versa just because they did not know you were getting over. And lastly, drive the speed limit. I believe so many people have lost their lives in the car because of reckless driving. Going fast seems fine then, but in an instance, a flash, it could all be over because you or another person drove like a race car driver.
I have only been in minor car accidents where no one was injured. I have experienced a family member get into a bad accident. She crashed into the back of another vehicle because she was on her phone for a split second and took her eyes off the road. The other car was getting over in her lane and she hit them hard. The other people in the other car were left unharmed but their car was severely damaged. My family member broke her wrist from the impact and had many bruises. Her car was totaled. If she had not been on her phone, the accident would not have happened.
Some steps I can take to be a safer driver is to stay off my cell phone while behind the wheel. I can pay full attention to the road and the cars around me. I can also wear my seat belt. I will adjust my mirrors as necessary when I am not driving. I will use my signal when turning or switching lanes. I will not speed even if I am running behind to ensure the safety of myself and others. I can and will review the driving laws in the state I reside in and follow them. I will encourage my friends and family to practice safe driving, especially while I am the passenger in their car. I will make sure that I verbally remind them about their seat belts, mirrors, speed, and awareness on the road. It is so important and essential to drive safely to be able to get from point a to point b.
