Currently
nearly 40,000 people die every year in car accidents. This number is
higher than the number of U.S troops killed in the Korean War.
Something needs to be done to help reduce this number. One possible
solution is to create a more comprehensive driving exam and a better
drivers ed course. Doing this could help to better educate
people about the laws of the road and teach them better driving
habits. I personally have never been in a serious driving accident.
Many of my friends drive in ways that would be considered very
irresponsible. For example, I know of one person who will drive 100
miles per hour on their way home from work down a highway with a set
speed limit of 65. This is very unsafe not to mention illegal. While
this person is unlikely to change, we can help the youth of the
future to not develop these habits. Some things I could do to improve
my own driving habits are to be gentler on my clutch and change gears
sooner so that I accelerate slower and therefore safer as well as
simply just taking my time and not rushing everywhere. The latter
holds value for everyone. Many accidents are simply caused by people
getting into a rush and making mistakes because of it. In all reality
legislation will not change much in lowering driving deaths but
fixing people's bad driving habits will.
