Importance
of Driver Safety

Imagine
losing a parent, a sibling, or a close friend to a fatal car
accident? That is a horrible reality for many people across the
country. It is up to the citizens of the United State to prevent such
accidents, and to ensure that new drivers have the skills necessary
to drive safely. Drivers ed is one way that local governments
can help new drivers be more prepared for the roads. Personally, my
drivers ed class showed me the realities of fatal accidents but
also the clear-cut laws that are enforced with drivers. Both of these
aspects encouraged me to be as safe as possible to protect myself,
those in my car, and the other drivers around me. When the
instructors were brutally honest about vehicular deaths it engrained
a desire to be safe, which in turn helps to prevent death later on.
When truthful information about car accidents and death is taught to
large groups of new drivers, the number of deaths falls.

In
addition to this, new policy can be enacted to lower the number of
car-related deaths each year. This policy could be anything to more
cameras at intersections to a drunk driver hotline that intoxicated
people can call if they are unable to drive. More cameras would be a
positive change as people are more likely to abide by traffic laws
when they are being filmed. Also, a drunk driver hotline would be a
great step in preventing alcohol related accidents. Drivers who are
too intoxicated to drive could call the hotline that would provide
them with information on the alternate means of transportation
available to them. Driving under the influence is one of the largest
causes of driving deaths, and giving drivers better options rather
than driving would also help to lower annual death rates.

Once
my cousin got into an accident on the interstate because she decided
to check her phone while driving. She lost control of the car, and
flew off the road into the median totaling her car. Luckily, she came
out of the accident unharmed, but from then on she understood the
importance of driving safely. For me, I know that many small actions
mean just as much as large actions. Therefore, it is up to me to
stand up and say something when I see reckless or dangerous driving.
I can alert my friends and family when they are knowingly driving
dangerously, and I can definitely offer to be a designated driver to
friends and family who may be intoxicated. Even though I am just one
person, my small actions can help to prevent further deaths and
protect the people I love.
