What steps can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving?

Have you ever had an experience of being in car accident or have seen your friends or family members driving irresponsibly?

What steps can you take to be a better and safer driver as well as help others become safer on the road?

Approximately 8 to 9 people die daily just from distracted driving. Accidents that come from distracted driving are mostly caused by young teen drivers. Distracted driving is the cause of many fatal accidents. Distracted driving is 6 times more deadly than driving drunk. Many people bypass the fact of distracted driving. Even a brief moment of being on your phone can result in accidents, many times when my relatives are on the phone for a brief second they will look back up and have to swerve back on the road. Although I have been fortunate enough to not lose anyone from distracted driving or directly experience an accident from it, it has still raised my level of awareness. Living in a world where distracted driving has become a normal activity. Stopping at a red light and seeing the person in the car next to you texting on their phone, or on social media. Making you realize that when you drive you have to be more aware and not just drive for yourself, but the safety of others. There have been plenty of times when I have been driving and seen people run a red light while on their phone, not caring about the safety of others, or even themselves.
Many times people think of distracted driving as just being on your phone, there are many other types of distractions as well. Such as the radio, looking for something that you dropped, or cognitive distractions., even just eating and drinking make cause you to take your attention off of the road. Many times young drivers become distracted drivers because they see their parents do it, which makes them think that it is good and won’t harm anyone. Distracted driving not only puts your passengers in your car at risk, but it also puts the safety of the public health at risk as well. When you start driving distracted it is incredibly hard to control that bad habit and stop. Ever since I started driving I make myself put my phone up, because I do not want to put myself or any others at risk for 5 seconds, or just to change a song. I value my life more than 5 seconds. My relatives driving distracted has raised my awareness of the dangers of driving. Distracted driving has not only affected me on the road but also in my daily life. Knowing that if there is more traffic then I have to go the opposite way because a lot of times more drivers are on the road and more traffic tends to mean more distracted drivers. This is because everyone is driving as fast, or we tend to stop more while driving in traffic than if there wasn’t any.
Raising awareness of distracted driving is important to improve road safety and the safety of others. One way to promote awareness would be to have classes about the results of this in school because just telling people won’t always be enough. We could create workshops, or campaigns to show the negative effects. Also having workshops having guest speakers who were affected by distracted driving at schools would attract people’s attention, showing them that distracted driving can become deadly. These speakers may have their own strategies for avoiding distractions, such as forcing yourself to make limitations on your phone. Making yourself memorize how to get to places without your GPS, can limit your being on your phone even if it’s just for short distances. Many times cars come with a system that prevents you from needing to be on your phone. As I mentioned before it can become a bad habit if the young drivers aren’t informed. Schools that target young drivers can change how young drivers view and feel about distracted driving. Many young drivers are not able to take it seriously, because they think something will never happen to them, or it’s just 5 seconds on my phone it won’t do anything.
There are many ways to prevent distracted driving among youth drivers. Many teens tend to be on social media and pay attention to any campaigns or any important media news on social media. Using social media to show people the ways to prevent distracted driving would get more people's attention, and would very thoroughly get the point across to everyone. As well as using social media some apps put restrictions on your phone while driving, which not many people know about. Before young drivers start driving we can get them to turn on all of their entertainment systems, or navigation systems before they start driving. And before they start driving they use the chance to put their phone in driving mode or silence all notifications.
Distracted driving poses a significant threat to society. And as technology only becomes greater more distractions will be provided, and eventually, many more people will start to drive distracted. This is why the dangers of it need to be broadcasted more and more people need to be informed. By working together to raise awareness we can reduce the risk of accidents on the road, and create safer public areas for everyone. I hope to one day share this essay about distracted driving and change their viewpoints on distracted driving. Which will hopefully change their actions when they drive. And again getting parents to limit their phone time while they are driving, so young drivers will be able to follow positively in their parent's footsteps. Since they tend to follow their parent's activities. I hope to share this essay one day and change people’s perspectives on this issue. Additionally, I want others to make safer choices not just for themselves, but for everyone on the road and everyone in their car. Distracted driving is one of the many things that everyone shares at all ages. Every time a distracted driver gets on the road everyone’s life is put in danger. A few seconds is never worth a life.
