Importance of Safety Behind the Wheel

The easiest way to be a safer driver is actually more simple than most people think. If we go back to when we first started learning how to drive, we practiced the basic safeties behind the wheel. For instance, ten and two on the wheel, driving with one foot only, coming to a complete stop at a stop sign, never texting and driving, never to drink and drive, and always wearing a seatbelt. Reverting to ten and two on the wheel can prevent many different injuries due to the fact that both hands are on the wheel constantly and being aware of surroundings involving driving. I often drive with only one arm, but I have to remind myself to put both hands on the wheel and be aware and cautious of my surroundings. Driving with one foot sounds like a more simple concept to follow, but in reality people struggle with driving with only one foot. For example, one of my best friends drives with two feet and I get so nervous when I am riding with him because I never know what is going to happen if he incorrectly places his foot or presses down on one of the pedals with the wrong foot. Coming to a complete stop at a stop sign is a key component in driving. If we do not stop and look both ways before crossing the road we may hit another car or run somebody over. The three step method to this is to stop, look left, look right, and back to left. This will help you think before just simply crossing the road. It is hard to practice this tactic when someone is not crossing the road, but we still need to work on this no matter what the situation is. Texting and driving is one of the most dangerous acts one may do behind the wheel. The most wrecks involve people texting and driving or looking down at their phone. Phones can cause so much harm when we are driving. I know many people that constantly look down at their phones while driving. Many people may only text and drive when they are by themselves and nobody else is in the vehicle with them, but that is even worse because nobody is in the vehicle to keep an eye out for them. Society has made it sound okay to look down to change your music or to check messages, but even the slightest time we spend looking down can cause an accident. Most people do not care about the problems they cause by texting and driving, but in reality we cause so many more problems by just looking down at our cellular devices. Drinking and driving causes many accidents because alcohol leaves your mind and reaction time very slow. If an object were to jump out in front of one while drinking and driving there is no way we would be able to make the correct decision because of the alcohol. I have seen families and friends get into fights because they get their keys taken away after drinking that night. Wearing a seatbelt is also a big mistake that people do not understand. When we are driving at great speeds wearing a seatbelt literally saves our lives. If something were to happen and we accidently got into a wreck, wearing a seatbelt would determine if we get thrown out of the vehicle or stay in and hopefully survive. I know of many people who have gotten into wrecks and have walked away because they are wearing their seatbelts. My cousin got into a car accident out in the country this past summer and unfortunately did not make it because he was thrown out when the vehicle was rolling. He was a sixteen year old sophomore and the effect it had on his family and the community is tragic. Wearing a seatbelt driving is imperative even if we are not going very far. This can save our friends and family so much pain by just fastening your seatbelt. The effects that these driving actions have on people in the community, friends, and family is very sad when it comes to driving. A study showed that an accident is more likely to occur driving than flying. This should not be the case if we just take care of ourselves and remember to think safety first. The laws are in place for reasons and we need to follow them even if we do not think it could harm anyone.
