Going through driver education in the past has helped me become a better driver. Growing up in a small community, everyone begins to drive early learning habits from their parents. Not all of these habits are good habits. With these bad habits, it makes the roads unsafe. Most will take driver's education and become drivers that help keep the roads safe. Learning about all the traffic laws that most parents don’t even know can do wonders. Having more knowledge about the roads and the laws can make one that much better of a driver. My brothers are currently going through Drivers Education and are teaching me laws that I forgot from the lack of use. They constantly remind whoever they drive with of all the laws. This may be annoying, but the roads are safer if all the laws are followed. With more people following the laws, we will have fewer deaths and fewer people speeding. In our small community, the police know everyone leaving fewer people to get pulled over. This leads more people to speed and be more reckless when driving. If we were to stricten on these laws people wouldn’t drive as fast or recklessly on our roads.
Steps that can be taken to reduce the amount of deaths from driving can be a reminder of driving laws. As we grow we tend to believe that we are better drivers; therefore, people tend to care less about the laws and not use as much precaution as they did before. My brothers are new drivers on the road. Most people always say, “Oh we will need to watch the roads now”. This is actually the opposite of what normally happens. I watch numerous friends of mine speed around town, sometimes reaching speeds of forty-five to fifty miles per hour just driving through town. When being with my brothers they are so cautious that they drive slower and pay more attention to the road. Another way we can make the roads safer is by getting phones out of people's hands while driving. My father, a high school math teacher, always breaks down the seconds it takes you to look at your phone and how fast you drive, showing the area at which you covered just by glancing at your phone. These numbers always astound the students as they believe they weren’t doing much damage. I believe that taking the phones out of people’s hands and more knowledge about traffic laws will help our roads stay safer.
Being a driver that is on the more precautionary side I have never been in a car accident. Normally being the driver of the friend group I have not ridden with others that often, not having rode with others more has kept me from seeing any of them in car accidents. Even though I have not often ridden with others, I have been in the car while others are driving irresponsibly. Recently on the highway I was following a friend on the way home when he began to pick up speed in his Dodge Challenger reaching speeds of close to eighty miles per hour. This is one of the few times I have seen him speed. Other times I have seen people not drive with responsibility is when they pick up the phone while they drive. This past week after a prom I attended at another school, the girl who asked me was driving me to her house. On the way she reached to pick up her phone to change the song when I snagged the phone from her. She originally was made as being on her phone while driving is something that isn’t uncommon for her. After explaining my side she let me have the phone and I chose the song she wanted.
Something I can do to make our roads safer is to have more knowledge of the laws for our roads. Listening to all of my brothers’ little comments on how to drive safely can help me be better on the roads, even if it feels like I am overusing my blinker. Always keeping speeds at the speed limit or below can also keep the roads safer. Sometimes when not looking at the speedometer speeds can reach five to ten miles per hour over the speed limit. I believe that a new area will help me drive. Driving in the big city will allow me to be in an area where the police won’t know me as well as letting more slide. I also believe that driving in a big city will allow me to hone my skills and improve. I believe that adding experience can also keep our roads safer. With more experience, one gains more knowledge.
