In the Driver Seat: Responsibility comes from Experience

My heart was pounding, I was petrified and panicking. What did I just do?  All I wanted was to rewind and take different steps to avoid the accident I had just caused. I was trying to get out of the school traffic as quickly as possible. While looking left, oblivious to everything else, I stepped on the gas to turn right. Bam! I crashed into the car in front of me. My impatience and lack of attention had caught up with me.  After being involved in this distracted driving accident, I see things very differently.  I now understand that every decision behind the wheel matters because it can protect lives or put them at risk. Getting my driver's license was one of the biggest milestones in my life. Like most teenagers, I couldn't wait for the freedom that came with driving myself to school, baseball practice, work, and spending time with friends. At first, driving felt like just another part of my routine. I didn't think much about the responsibility that came with it. Driver education is about much more than learning traffic laws. It teaches responsibility, good judgment, awareness, and respect for everyone on the road.

Driver education plays an important role in reducing car accidents and saving lives. Learning how to control a vehicle is only the first step. Good driver education also teaches people how to recognize hazards, stay calm under pressure, adjust to changing road conditions, and expect mistakes from other drivers. It emphasizes defensive driving, which means staying alert and avoiding dangerous situations before they become accidents. These habits stay with drivers long after they pass their driving test. Every time we get behind the wheel, we have a responsibility not only to ourselves but also to our passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, and every family expecting their loved ones to arrive home safely.

Education only works if drivers actually apply what they learn. Many accidents happen because people choose to text, speed, drive while tired, or get behind the wheel after drinking or using drugs. Distracted driving has become one of the leading causes of preventable crashes because it's easy to believe that looking away for just a second isn't dangerous. In reality, those few seconds can make all the difference. At highway speeds, a vehicle can travel the length of a football field before the driver looks back at the road. During that time, traffic can stop, another driver can make a mistake, or someone can step into a crosswalk. One brief distraction can change lives forever.

Preventing these accidents takes more than simply knowing the rules. It requires safe habits every time we drive. Turning on Do Not Disturb While Driving, entering directions before leaving, and waiting until the car is parked to change music are easy ways to eliminate distractions. Wearing a seat belt, following the speed limit, leaving enough space between vehicles, and never driving while impaired or overly tired are simple choices that save lives. Schools and communities should continue sharing driver education programs and real-life stories because they often leave lasting impressions. Parents, coaches, teachers, and experienced drivers also have an important responsibility to set good examples for younger drivers.

My own perspective changed because of a mistake I made. I've had my license for two years, and during that time I was involved in a distracted driving accident. Thankfully, no one was seriously hurt, but the experience completely changed how I think about driving. Before that day, I honestly believed taking my eyes off the road for just a moment wasn't a big deal. Like many young drivers, I thought I was in control and that nothing bad would happen. I couldn't have been more wrong.

That accident became one of the biggest learning experiences of my life. It showed me how quickly one careless decision can change everything. Even though everyone walked away safely, I still think about how much worse it could have been. Someone could have been seriously injured, or a family could have received heartbreaking news because I wasn't paying full attention. Instead of letting that mistake define me, I've used it as motivation to become a more responsible and focused driver.

Since the accident, I've completely changed the way I drive. Before every trip, I turn on Do Not Disturb While Driving so notifications won't tempt me to check my phone. If I need directions, I enter them before I start driving. I choose my music before leaving and wait until I'm parked if I want to change it. I also keep the volume low enough to hear emergency vehicles and other important sounds. When friends ride with me, I enjoy talking with them, but my attention stays on the road because getting everyone to our destination safely is always my first responsibility.

Driving isn't just about getting from one place to another. It's about making responsible decisions every time we get behind the wheel. I hope that by sharing my experience, other drivers, especially new ones, will realize they don't have to learn this lesson the hard way. Looking back, I'm grateful my accident wasn't worse because it taught me a lesson I'll never forget.
