Our nation is under
attack by irresponsible drivers both young, old, and anywhere in
between. This year alone there have been over 40,000 fatal car
accidents. Most vehicular homicides occur under the influence of
alcohol or drugs, but sometimes these accidents take place under
random circumstances. More and more people need to become educated on
the rules of the road. Adults with children beginning to drive need
to teach them the fundamentals in order to prevent a life from being
lost, youths and teens must avoid succumbing to peer pressure and
maintain a clear head whilst driving. Steps necessary in decreasing
the amounts of deaths due to accidents are when in social situations,
make sure everyone has access to a sober ride, while in the driver’s
seat have your phone ringer off and face down as to not be distracted
by an incoming text. What’s more important, a funny picture from
your friend or stopping in time for the child chasing their ball into
the street? Pulling over is always a viable option when wanting to
text. Millennials are constantly on their phones, leading to the
study conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety that
millennials are the number one cause of car accidents. I,
fortunately, have never been in a car accident, but I have witnessed
cases of irresponsible driving. At my high school last year, two
students were involved in an accident on campus. Their vehicles
involved were a Ford Truck and a Sedan. The Ford rammed into the
Sedan by accident, but the drivers of both vehicles were on their
phones. I have also seen my uncle drive irresponsibly. Many times he
has not stopped at stop signs, not looking where he is going, and
speeding. Actions both I and many other can take to improve the
safety of the streets are obeying all traffic laws including wearing
seat belts, going the speed limit, staying aware of our surroundings,
respecting other individuals of the road, and refraining from
consuming alcoholic and perception altering substances.
