In The Driver's Seat

When I began learning how to drive, I was overjoyed! All I could think of was the freedom to go places with my friends. Once I started learning how to drive, I was all too anxious to get on the highway. My goal was to get my license in enough time to drive to the prom.

The practice of driving was exhilarating. Then my mother signed me up for drivers ed in the classroom which she said would be necessary to get my license. The classes took place over the December holiday break. They began at 8am and lasted until 5pm. It was my entire day for a whole week! I would hardly get to sleep in. I reluctantly took the class, but it was during this time that I realized so many rules of the road and other laws in place to keep teen drivers safe. Things to be aware of when driving in the rain, and a car hydroplaning even at 35mph was something I did not know. I believe the more information teens have about driving safely, and the more teens are educated on the consequences one small mistake can have, the better drivers teens will be. I also believe restricting the time of day teens drive helps with preventing accidents. I have to admit, those restrictions did not match my idea of fun and freedom, but when I was educated on how distractions can impact your driving, I was easily sold.

Classroom hours of drivers ed is one way to reduce the number of deaths related to driving. Additionally, I also think it would benefit new drivers to stay up to date with laws and rules of the road by taking a yearly course, and having to renew their license each year until the age of 21.

Each year we spend time traveling by car to visit family. I have seen careful driving and not so careful driving. Driving with my father can be quite scary. He is often distracted by his phone, drives over the speed limit and is often too close to cars and trucks. I believe once drivers have had their license for more than 10 years, they should be required to take classroom drivers ed as well, since new laws are created all the time.

Some of the steps I take to be a better and safer driver is being prepared. I find the route of my destination, check the weather, and give myself enough time in case I get lost. I also make sure not to go over the speed limit and be careful of the drivers around me who may not be paying attention.

Being in the driver’s seat has given me a different view from my original idea of fun and freedom. Now, when I drive safety comes first.
