When a person
learns to read, they start by learning the alphabet which builds the
foundation for learning sounds and eventually words. Drivers
education is just like learning to read, you first build the
foundation by learning the rules, laws and courtesies of the road
before moving behind the wheel. Without building that universal
foundation, different regions could each develop their own “culture”
of driving. Which may work in that area, but during travel,
especially during holidays, such a style of driving would be
extremely fatal. Therefore, driving education is extraordinarily
important, without it, driving would be immensely more dangerous.
I believe a very
affective action that could be taken, although somewhat difficult to
organize, would be recurring driving safety classes. Every 4 years
upon getting a license, drivers should have to take a short refresher
class on driving and driver safety.

I’m only 18 and
I’ve been in two accidents, neither a result of my own doing, but
others. The number of accidents I’ve already been involved in at
the age I’m at is just one small example of the possible range of
dangers posed as a result of negligent drivers. The idea that my life
could’ve been cut short due to the irresponsibility of another
person, even for just a few seconds, is a terrifying thought. One
that makes me a large advocate for action to keep the roads safe.

Small steps I, and everyone can take to be safer behind the wheel,
would be to get enough sleep, being tired behind the wheel is one of
the largest causes of crashes. Putting the phone on do not disturb,
keeping it from buzzing or distracting the driver. Even simply
allowing your car to warm up before you drive in the winter, if
you’re too focused on how cold you are, you may miss simple things,
which can become large accidents. The largest tip I’d say though,
is to make sure (as a passenger) not to distract the driver,
distracting the driver puts them, yourself, anyone else in the car,
and others on the roads, all at risk, its dangerous, and simply not
worth it.
