In the Driver’s Seat

Driving is a privilege that many start to receive when they turn 16 and complete the drivers written test in Canada. Driving may seem fun, however, there is a large sense of responsibility when placed behind the wheel. Drivers ed is important in reducing the number of deaths as a result of driving because the more knowledgeable one is, the safer it is to be on the road. In addition with more experience, one will know how to act under certain circumstances and can react accordingly in a given situation. Awareness is also an immense factor when playing a part in reducing the number of deaths as a result of driving.

To reduce the number of deaths related to driving, many steps can be taken such as ensuring the car is functioning properly by getting it checked regularly and ensuring that the driver is to abide by all rules when on the road. This consists of no distracted driving (texting on your phone), stopping for three seconds at a stop sign and before making a right turn at a red light and no drunk driving. Another rules that are explicit that should still be followed are: stopping the car in a parking lot to take a nap if the driver is tired to avoid sleeping while driving, and be aware of the overall surrounding. Self awareness is also important when driving on the road. Drivers need to be aware of their mental and physical condition before starting the car. For instance, if you know your eyesight is terrible at night, try to avoid driving by carpooling with a co-worker or using public transit. These are common ways to reduce carbon emissions and greenhouse gases, which benefits the environment as well as saves you and the person or people who would’ve been affected by the car accident. Although this may seem like a more troublesome route in terms of time or money consumption, the results of such actions will help reduce the amount of car accidents, and in turn less deaths.

I have never personally experienced being in a car accident, but I have seen them occur right in front of me. This caught me by surprise because I didn’t think it would happen so suddenly. The car beside me backing out and consequently, the opposite car was backing out as well. The opposite car noticed that they were both doing the same thing, however, the car beside me was backing out quickly and didn’t see that the opposite car already came out. This was irresponsible because the car beside me didn’t ensure the situation was safe to back out in such a quick speed, thus led to bumping the opposite car. I have also experienced, my parents and my friend’s parents who drive irresponsibility, such as not hitting the blinker to turn, rushing a yellow light, barely stopping at a stop sign, being distracted on their phone and travelling 20km/h beyond the speed limit.

To become a better and safer driver, one must realize that they should take things slowly and not rush, because that causes car accidents when drivers don’t pay attention to the cars around them and act recklessly. Distracted driving can be minimized through the penalty when they get caught. Everyone should adapt their habits to become a safe and better driver by engaging in self awareness, reminded of the rules that are to be enforced and actively engaging in safe driving practices by following the rules in place. One must always be a responsible driver to ensure the safety of others and well as themselves.
