Steps that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths due to car accidents can vary based on who takes the action. If a car manufacturer wants to reduce the number of deaths, they can test ways to increase the durability of the vehicles and increase the padding in cars or decrease the rate of deterioration on the car. If the person is a government official, they can work to improve road quality, increase the amount of time spent in drivers training, or increase traffic police.
I, myself, have not been in a car accident, but people close to me have. Recently, my friend was in a car crash where her tire fell off and her car hit a tree. She was okay and was able to walk away, but her car was no longer safe to drive. The other person that is close to me that was in a car crash was my mom. Back in the year 2000, my mom was driving into Kalamazoo when she hit a patch of black ice. This caused her car to slide off the highway and crash into the cement dividers that block off the different sides of the highway. This accident resulted in her truck being totaled and her to have anxiety when driving in wintertime for the rest of her life. Both of these accidents could have been avoided if my friend would have gotten her car routinely looked at by a certified mechanic or if my mom would have been more careful while driving the highway.
The one time that I have personally experienced someone driving recklessly would have been about a year ago. My friend and I were coming home from the local mall and we were driving behind someone. At first we thought this person was just driving slowly and close to the center line. About two minutes later we saw this person swerving around the road, so we backed off and talked about calling the police. We started to reach a round-about and they were not slowing down. Thankfully there was no one in the round at this time because the car in front of us drove straight into the round-about. They drove up and over the center, through a ditch, only to stop in a childcare parking lot. Again, thankfully, this was at night and not many people were around and the people in the car did not seem to be hurt because they drove away. After we got to the roundabout, we decided to call the police and tell them about the irresponsible driver and what their car looked like.
The steps that one can take to become a better driver include making sure that whatever car you have, is running smoothly, the gas tank is full, the lights are on and working, and the tires have air. Always going the speed limit and obeying road signs will help not only me but others to keep safe on the road. You can also drive according to the weather. If there is a snowstorm, downpour, or hail, you can go slower, take main roads, and pay attention to other drivers and our surroundings. To help others be safer on the road, we can inform others if they have a light out or if something looks wrong on their car, turn your bright lights off when facing oncoming traffic and while being behind another driver, use turn signals for everything, and pay attention to surroundings. If you know the person, you can pull over and help them if they are in need. Being prepared for anything and limiting distractions are the best way to keep everyone safe while driving.
