In The Driver’s Seat: Lessons From the Road Between Two Homes

Before I understood the true responsibility of driving, I viewed it primarily as a symbol of independence. A driver’s license represented freedom, opportunity, and the ability to create my own path. However, after making the eight-hour drive from Denver, Colorado, to Langston, Oklahoma, I learned that driving represents something much greater. It represents responsibility, awareness, preparation, and trust.

As a college student pursuing my education away from home, long-distance driving has become an important part of my journey. The road between Colorado and Oklahoma represents more than a distance between two locations. It represents the transition between where I started and where I am working toward my future. Every trip reminds me that growth requires courage, but it also requires responsibility.

When I first began making this drive, I realized quickly that long-distance driving requires a different level of awareness than simply traveling across town.
