Can
you hear it? The slow organ playing. The smell of flowers. The sound
of people sobbing. Yeah that's right, were at a funeral. The funeral
is yours. You decided to text and drive and now all of your loved
ones have lost someone dear to them. Nearly 1.25 million people die
in a car accident each year, and on average 3,287 deaths happen a
day. Additionally 20-50 million are injured or disabled. The craziest
part about it is more than half of all road traffic deaths occur
among young adults ages 15-44. This is why we pay attention in
Drivers Ed. If we paid more attention to the road and to the class
driving deaths could be taken down drastically. Most people take a
drivers ed class before they get behind the wheel of a car. They
teach you how to drive safely so you will be ready for the road.
Drivers ed doesn’t just teach you about offensive driving
techniques, though they also teach defensive techniques. In my eyes,
offensive
techniques help
teach a driver how to drive safely while defensive
techniques teach
a young driver how to drive with erratic drivers. Cell phones have
single handley warped our driving capabilities. For example, 4,000
young adults were killed in 2015 from texting and driving. It’s
unnecessary and shameful. If you want to reduce traffic deaths
than its time to start using your mirrors and being a more defensive
driver. I was in a wreck in May of last year. I was headed to
Charlotte for a day of fun but was moved off the road by a distracted
driver. I ran into a tree and luckily enough I left the crash with
only a small case of whiplash and a sore arm. Blessed is the only
word to describe it. The driver was drunk. Drunk driving and cell
phone use is some of the more leading causes of death on the road. If
you see someone about to use a motor vehicle and they are drunk,
think about that casket I told you about earlier, and then take their
keys. They may get mad at you but would you rather have someone mad
at you or would you want someone’s death on your hands. The choice
is yours. You can either decide to stay parked where you are and do
your texting and calls before you start driving and be a safe driver,
OR you could be irresponsible and put lives at risk. I have seen
people slam on breaks at stoplights and I have been in the car with
people distracted by their cell phone and to be very frank, it scares
the life out of me. Knowing that person is putting me and others at
risk is disturbing and you should too. I am a high school senior.
Take it from me, who is a student and a young adult. Being cool
doesn't matter if your lying on your deathbed.
