Drivers ed Initiative Award - Summer 2019

Learning
from the drivers ed manual can help reduce the number of
deaths as a result of driving which is of the utmost importance. We
need to be able to realize not everything and everywhere we go is fun
and games, especially if it can affect other people’s lives in a
way we can’t undo. I know people say this all the time but
thousands of people die from car accidents a year and the other
hundreds are either injured or disabled. We never know what can
happen and that’s why it’s necessary to know the rules of the
road.

One
step that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to
driving is putting your mobile devices away. Using your phone while
your driving will distract you even when you think it won’t.
Another step is to not drive recklessly. Some people like to have fun
when they think they’re alone but there’ll always be that one
chance where you won’t be. Also you shouldn’t be eating when
you’re on the driver’s seat. Something might fall on your lap and
you’ll want to pick it up, without looking you’ll end up crashing
into another car or worse.

I,
unfortunately, have experienced two car accidents when I was a child.
My father was taking one of my younger brothers and I to school. We
stopped at a red light and waited for it to turn green until another
car on our right turned and crashed into us. I didn’t have my
seatbelt on and hurt my neck. I was rushed to the hospital and was
told I was okay. I’m not scared of cars or being in one however the
slightest swerve or bump constantly takes me back to that memory. The
crazy thing is neither my father or the lady did the wrong thing,
what happened was the lady got blinded by the sunlight and that’s
what worries me the most. No matter what safety come first.
Some
steps I can take to be a better and safer driver as well as help
others become safer on the road is to suggest others to download the
Zutobi app which is an app of driving practice tests for their permit
test or to simply remind yourself of the rules and regulations.
Another step is to check your car regularly to make sure there are no
malfunctions. We need to be prepared for the unexpected. Safety
starts with you and you alone. The more people do, the more people
will recognize and the less and less people will be dying from car
accidents. We can’t prevent what’s going to happen once we make a
mistake but we can prevent what might happen. We need to be smart
enough to make the right decisions. The rules are there to help you,
not restrict you. Without them we would be lost and no one would be
safe. Make safety your priority. Be the change you want to see in the
world.
