Too often, news breaks of accidents that have occurred within our general areas. Many choose to look away—also desensitized to the repeated offense to see the bigger picture of what it says about our society. Everyone claims that such events are avoidable, and in that respect, we can all agree. The lives lost can be saved, even with the rising rates. It all comes down to the education and exposure we experience early on before getting behind the wheels; is it knowing how to prevent it that we can make a difference. The impact that proper drivers ed can have on saving lives should never be downplayed. Through this, drivers can reduce the neglect that occurs while on the road, which can lead to preventable accidents. Knowing the repercussions that can be brought upon you in such instances is the only way to better the system. A good example of steps that can lead to reducing the mortality rate of driving would be to instill stricter laws on phone usage in a vehicle. In this day and age, accidents caused by devices are quickly on the rise. Though many may argue that having such things in possession is essential to one's livelihood, it is irrefutable to say that it should not hold more influence or value over another's life, along with the legal ramifications. It would serve well to ban such things to be held in the hand while driving. While it may seem extreme, no matter how long they have been behind the wheel should feel they have mastered driving enough to take the risk. While I have not been in the position of someone involved in an accident, I have faced the reality of almost losing loved ones. It was due to a distracted driver that it had occurred, and I realized just how easy it is to cause one. Therefore, I implore those who ride along in vehicles that you keep the drivers in check, for both you and those around. Never be afraid to call them out if they are irresponsible, it is the difference between life and death. In the end, we should always stay attentive while driving. It creates a safer environment for everyone involved. Make sure to get educated before hitting the road and be a responsible driver. Serve as an example to those who still have more to learn and stay safe.
