Learned
Habits Die Hard
Food,
water, and shelter. The survival trifecta. Throughout the shifts and
advancements of history, these three were always prevalent in each
and every fad and trend that has swept the world. Mankind has been
wired to seek out those three necessities in every aspect of life
they find adaptable; even through the clouded film of capitalism that
has been heavily supplied throughout every societal era. However,
basic survival has since been silhouetted by the rising popularity of
technology. Wifi has squeezed its way into the must-haves of every
mind, and there seems to be no way of stopping the mind from dividing
its attention to the benefit of advancing tech. And with the coming
age of efficient transportation, technology has mingled with the
minds of many, and has torn eyes from the road to the world held in
their screens, leading to 1.6 million life threatening accidents each
year. Distracted driving has plagued the drivers of today, and
through time, it has grown to be somewhat an epidemic across the
country. However, much like there are eventual cures for epidemics,
there is a cure for this habit, which may be hard to disperse through
all of the car drivers of the world: focus and prioritization. Many
times, moments before disaster, the driver places the importance of
their conversation above their own lives, and loses their lives in
favor of whatever information had to be passed along to the
recipient. Safe driving has now been pushed to the sidelines due to
shifting values in appearance; it’s commonplace now for adults to
divide their attention from the road, but if while young, those
budding adults were taught to focus on what was important and
prioritize what needed an answer and what could wait, then the roads
would be a safe place. However, that would include dismantling a
centuries long habit that has spread nationally, so change won’t
come easy, but with a bit of heavy handed campaigning, and some
backbone, even this learned habit could be dropped.
