As someone who will soon attend school for animation and game design, I pay close attention to how stories are built one scene at a time. The LEGO Movie reminds me that even the smallest pieces matter. I see driving no differently. One small mistake, like paying attention to your friend's phone, can create unexpected problems, and that does not mean Everything Is Awesome. Just like every character in a movie has a role to play, every driver has a responsibility. Whether you are a good driver or a distracted one, your choices become part of someone else’s story.
I learned that responsibility long before I earned my driver's license. I did not pass my permit test.  I was very disappointed. When I failed my permit test twice it made me take driving more seriously. Instead of giving up, I continued to study, learned the rules of the road through practicing with experienced drivers, while talking through why the signs were in place as well as proper turns. This was very helpful and eventually led to me passing. Even after passing my road test, I waited until I felt comfortable before driving regularly. Today, becoming a safe driver is something that is important.
Not passing my permit test taught me something important: being prepared matters. In many situations, people think being successful means getting something right the first time, but sometimes growth comes from learning through mistakes. Driving is one area where I cannot allow pride or embarrassment to make my decisions, because it can cost someone or myself a life. I ask questions, practice, and continue to learn are ways I show responsibility.
As I continue becoming more comfortable and gaining experience, I know that the smallest distraction can be dangerous. Driving responsibly on the road can help you get to your destination on time, and safely. But there can be small distractions that could lead to dangerous things. Listening to music too loud, or having passengers who distract you while you're driving can cause you to miss your turn and end up crashing into something or causing someone else to crash.
For me, I do not check my notifications on my phone or my messages. I wait until I stop. If I am using GPS because I am lost, I set it before moving and listen to the directions. If I must change them, I wait until it is safe. If I want to change my song, I ask a passenger if someone is with me, or I wait until the next stoplight.
I have seen what happens when others are distracted while driving. They end up swerving into lanes. Others honk at them to get their attention. Then there's one time I saw another person on the phone almost crash into someone. Being a safe driver is not only about avoiding tickets or accidents. It is also being able to spot when somebody else is being unsafe on the road and protect yourself.
Sometimes I do get stressed while driving. When I feel stressed, I slow down and pay even more attention to the road. I do not think about other problems while I am driving because my focus should be on driving safely. If I became distracted, I could lose control of my car and hurt someone else. That could affect families and cause tragedies that cannot be undone. It could also cause people to lose trust in my ability to drive responsibly.
I plan to put my phone Do not disturb before I start driving. I will turn down the music where I can still hear it, but also hear the road and what's surrounding me.  I wouldn't have passengers in the car until I'm more comfortable driving. I also will not drive tired because falling asleep at the wheel could cause a serious crash. I want to make sure I am a safe driver who can enjoy driving while staying aware of my surroundings. The Driver Education Initiative scholarship represents an opportunity to continue responsible habits as I begin the new chapter of independence.
This scholarship reminds me that safe driving is not only about my choices, but also about protecting the lives of others on the road. When I think about driving, I think about the responsibility that comes with having control of something that can impact another person's life. A vehicle is not just a way to get somewhere faster or for me another place I can show my creativity; it is a responsibility that requires patience, awareness, and respect. Every person on the road has somewhere they need to be, someone waiting for them, and a story that should continue. When drivers understand this responsibility, they can help reduce preventable tragedies and make the roads safer for everyone.Safe driving means remembering that I am sharing the road with people who matter.
