If caution is not prioritized, severe consequences can arise. I personally knew several young people, 18 and under, who were affected by this, and some of them never had the chance to make it to adulthood. I had a friend who was coming back from college one day and was distracted by her phone. As she was approaching another vehicle, she failed to notice that it had come to a complete stop. By the time she saw it, it was too late. She had no time to react and crashed into the back of it. This resulted in the loss of her life and emotional trauma for the other driver and those who loved her. It was very hard to receive the news of her loss, especially knowing that it could have been prevented. She was such an amazing person and friend of mine, and I wish more people realized how important cautious driving is. Another young man from my town, a newly licensed driver, lost his life when speeding on a dirt road. His vehicle could not stay in control when it hit a dip in the road and began to roll. This resulted in grief not only for his family and friends but for our whole town. Other factors, such as weather conditions like fog, rain, wind, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, have also affected the lives of kids in my area. It is so sad to know that all of these could have been prevented by a small change in the drivers decisions. I would like everyone to have proper driver education and be exposed to stories like these so we can prevent these situations from happening to more innocent people.
These tragedies are preventable. When young people are taught from a young age how important safe driving is, it gives them a foundation to build on when it comes time to get a driver’s license. An impactful way to reach drivers is by sharing personal stories or experiences—whether one’s own or others’—that influence emotions and thoughts. For example, giving a presentation to high school students about the effects of dangerous driving and showing them real-life events like I mentioned in my previous paragraph would give them a true sense of what can happen to anyone, no matter their age. Another way to prevent future accidents is to teach students proper driving precautions. Without knowledge, it is impossible to succeed in any area of life. This applies to driving in the sense that drivers cannot be expected to know how to drive safely if they do not have the proper education. Once they are educated, they need to understand the importance of the rules and why they are in place. Many people overlook or find simple rules like wearing a seatbelt or not texting while driving unimportant. Although these rules may seem basic, they still play a major role in keeping a person safe on the roads. By taking action and obeying the rules, we are doing everything in our power to keep ourselves safe. We cannot control how others drive, but we can control our own driving decisions.
Driver education is more important than most people realize. I hope that we can make this a priority as we move toward the future of vehicle production and usage. When we stick to the knowledge we have learned about driving, we are protecting ourselves and others from potential harm. We are also preventing heartbreak and emotional trauma for the families and friends of innocent people. The simple decisions we choose to make on the road could affect the outcome of someone’s life, resulting in either life or death.
