Mitchell Gehrig’s Drivers ed Initiative Award Scholarship Essay Mitchell Gehrig’s Drivers ed Initiative Award Scholarship Essay Safe driving is very important in today's world. With phones, music, and other distractions, paying attention to what is in front of you is undeniably the most important thing to focus on. Driving with my friends in college has been fun. Going on late night McDonalds runs, going to Walmart to hang out, and just having fun is great, but when I’m not driving I get a bit scared. Some of my friends drive way too fast, and I know they are capable drivers but what if the guy coming from the right isn’t and isn’t paying attention? Even when you are paying attention, I was in an accident where my dad stopped at the sign, looked, and went and boom! Someone came out in front of us. These are just a few experiences but other people may have had worse or more than me. I feel like the best way to avoid these kinds of accidents or accidents waiting to happen would be to have more strict driving speeds, to make sure that there is nothing blocking the view of the road so that everyone can see if someone is coming or not, and to make sure every student, teen, and adult has gone through Drivers Ed. Making sure that everyone knows when to stop, how to turn, and what to look for is so important because it can help lower the number of accidents and deaths in the U.S. alone. Knowing how to park a car, how to pull into a spot without a lot of room, how to switch lanes without ramming into someone, all those things can be learned in Drivers Ed, and can prevent a lot of accidents and deaths. Everyone can do a little something to make sure that accidents don't happen. What I do to make sure I am driving as safe as possible is to drive slower when I am in residential areas, make sure I am in a good spot before switching lanes, and giving everyone I am driving around enough room to work so they can drive their best as well. I also make sure to put my phone down and out of the way so I don’t get tempted to look at it while I am driving. If everyone did those few things that I am doing, there would be less accidents and people would be able to get from point A to point B in a safe way.
