I pledge to always remain attentive and cautious when driving because I understand the immense responsibility that comes with making the decision to operate a vehicle. Each time I sit behind the wheel, not only am I entrusted with the safety of myself, my passengers, and my vehicle, but I am responsible for the lives of everyone else sharing the road. Whether it be a woman driving home after a long day at work, a child sleeping in the back seat after being picked up from school, or a family in the middle of spending quality time together on a road trip, no one deserves to have their life forcefully snatched away from them in situations which are easily avoidable. All these instances are circumstances I, and loved ones around me, have fallen victim to, hence, the importance of driver education.
Last year, in Great Britain, there were 1,633 fatalities, 29,429 killed or seriously injured (KSI) casualties, and 133,443 casualties of all severities. Road traffic accidents make up 13% of all external causes of death and for children aged 10 to 14, road accidents make up for over 50% of all external causes of death. Road accidents are the silent killer of our modern society and future generations. Death from dangers parents warn their kids about, such as child trafficking, drug use, and even guns, don’t compare to the number of deaths and casualties children face from motor vehicle accidents. According to the Welsh Government website, “Road traffic accidents are the largest cause of serious injury in children” and “Twenty people are killed or seriously injured on Welsh roads every week,” according to the latest police recorded collision data. This is more than 1,000 lives lost or seriously affected by collisions every year, and what is terrifying is that this doesn’t compare to the statistics of road accidents in the US.
As of 2024, the United States has more than four times the number of car accidents of any other country in the world. This could relate to the fact that the United States has the largest network of roads, or that in many states, such as Alaska, Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, North and South Dakota, it is possible to obtain a learner's permit at just 14 years old and a driving license at 16. It is also the second largest consumer of automobiles, which means there are much more people who drive in the US, and there are much more miles of roads. Not only do road traffic crashes personally affect friends and families of the victims, but it negatively impacts the macroeconomy on a global scale. The World Health Organization reports that road incidents cost most countries 3% of their gross domestic product (GDP), which if not careful, could result in a recession. Reduced growth rates are often accompanied by a decline in real income, increased unemployment, and reduced production.
However, despite how appalling these figures may appear, surprisingly these statistics indicate an improvement in fatalities and casualties, which, more than likely, is a result of improvements in driver education. Driver education is crucial in reducing the number of deaths resulting from driving, whether it is speeding, driving under the influence, distracted driving or unsafe vehicles. By informing individuals on the importance of traffic laws, safe driving practices, and the dangers of reckless behavior behind the wheel, driver education equips them with the skills and awareness needed to navigate the roads responsibly. It instills in potential drivers the true meaning of responsibility and accountability, empowering drivers to prioritize safety above all else at all times.
However, I believe that more could still be done to prevent these accidents from occurring. For example, making it mandatory for those who are renewing their license to complete both a practical and theory driving test, updated to include the new rules and regulations. This is to ensure that everyone on the road has an up-to-date understanding of road laws. The implementation of stricter traffic laws, such as speeding and DUI regulations, can deter risky behavior and improvements in infrastructure, such as road lights and design improvements, could also prevent drivers from falling asleep at the wheel.
I personally refuse to let a moment of distraction compromise the well-being of others or myself and I always prioritize safety above all else, remaining fully focused on my dedication to being a responsible driver. By making this pledge, I am not only honoring my commitment to safety but also demonstrating my respect for the lives of those around me.
