The steps that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving include:
Awareness: Driver education helps to teach individuals about avoiding risky behavior when driving, such as distracted driving, speeding, and driving sleepy or under the influence of alcohol or drugs. This heightened awareness can lead to more cautious behavior behind the wheel.
Preparedness: Driver education teaches new drivers how to be prepared for unexpected events or situations on the road. It is better to know what to do before you get a flat tire on the road, rather than make a bad decision because you do not know what to do when it happens. Training on how to handle emergency situations, such as tire blowouts, brake failures, or collisions is important information for all new drivers to learn. In addition, driver education can teach drivers how to react appropriately in various scenarios so that they can prevent accidents from escalating into fatalities. Car dealerships should offer complimentary vehicle training reminders to customers who purchase new or used vehicles from their business. Safe driving reminders are helpful to all drivers.
Being Courteous: A courteous driver demonstrates polite and considerate behavior on the road towards other drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and others sharing the road. This can go a long way to keeping everyone safe. A driver can be courteous by following the basic traffic laws, using their turn signals, allowing cars to merge, maintaining space between their car and others, and being patient. A courteous driver also looks out for individuals on motorcycles, bikes, and scooters.
Continuous learning: Driver education should be consistently reinforced to remind all drivers about safe driving practices, such as wearing seat belts, maintaining a safe following distance, and avoiding aggressive driving behaviors.
According to my mom, many experienced drivers forget certain safe driving practices over time such as turning on headlights in rainy weather and bad road conditions. I have even heard my mom complain about drivers who do not clear the snow and ice from their car roof before driving at a high speed on the road. These reminders should be constantly reinforced through public service announcements, commercials, billboards, and highway signage.
Unfortunately, I have had the experience of being in a car accident when I was a passenger in my mother’s car. My mother was hit in the rear of her car when she was trying to merge into oncoming traffic. Due to that accident, I learned the value in calling the police to a traffic accident scene and taking photos. If my mother called the police to report the accident that day, she would not have been taken advantage of by the other driver’s insurance company, who refused to pay for the damages to my mother’s car based on a loophole. If she would have taken photos, she would have remembered the color of the car that hit her, and would have had images of the driver’s fake documentation.
There are several steps that I can take to be a better and safer driver as well as help others become safer on the road. Those steps include:
Following the laws: I will obey speed limits, road signs, and traffic signals.
Avoiding Distractions: I will keep my focus on the road and avoid dangerous distractions such as texting, searching social media, adjusting the radio while my car is in motion, and eating. I will use headphones when I am talking on the phone in my car.
Vehicle maintenance: I will make sure that my car has regular maintenance, and let my family know if I notice any unusual sounds, or issues with the car. I will also pay attention to any new lights or maintenance signals on the car dashboard.
Utilizing Safety Features: I will use the seat belt in my car and remind all passengers to do the same. I will gently use my horn if I notice other drivers drifting into my lane.
Staying Alert: I will not operate a vehicle if I do not feel well or if I feel sleepy.
Weather: I will adjust my driving behavior based on the weather conditions. For example, if it is raining, I will reduce my speed and increase my following distance.
Leading by Example: I will demonstrate safe driving habits for my friends and remind my parents to do the same. I will share information about safe driving habits with my friends, exhibit safe driving when my friends are riding with me, and encourage other drivers that I know to practice safety on the road.
By following these steps and promoting safe driving habits, I can successfully help create a safer environment on the road and serve as a good example for my parents and my peers.
