Driver’s Education is immensely important not only for the reduction of deaths as a result of driving, but for the safety of everyone. One person’s careless actions could potentially kill another person. The purpose of any drivers ed class is first to inform students of the risks and major implications of driving and second to guide them in the correct ways to drive safely. By teaching students the value of being defensive drivers who effectively communicate their intentions to others while driving, drivers ed classes become essential to reducing the number of deaths caused by car accidents. When classes inform their students and identify the problem, then there can be steps made to address the problem.

Drivers must know that if an accident occurs, they are liable. No one intentionally gets into a car-wreck, but many could be prevented by simple choices. In order to reduce the number of deaths that are from driving-related accidents, everyone behind the wheel must know that their actions have consequences. To reduce the risk of driving, especially in situations where the driver may be uncomfortable, take precautions. Turn on your headlights. Drive slower. Do not succumb to distractions. Follow the instructions from signs. Give cars ahead of you more space. If each person practices these easy solutions to reducing the risk of driving, there would be a monumental decrease in the number of driving-related deaths.

As a newer driver, I have had the advantage of being in an accident. I say advantage because it taught me that I was not as untouchable as I thought I was. Even though I was not driving, I learned that driving a little too fast in snowy conditions could cost a life. Although it didn’t and my sisters and I were fine, I have not forgotten that day whenever I am in the driver’s seat. Since the accident, I have learned to identify when I am uncomfortable driving. I then take precautions to feel better, I slow down, take in my surroundings, and make sure I have no distractions. I can only advise others to do the same. I know the consequences that dangerous driving can hold. I am now more careful and more aware of the responsibilities I have, not only for my life, but the lives of the people I transport, and of those who are on the other side of the yellow lines to my left.
