One of the
biggest causes of death by motor vehicle is simply the driver being
distracted. This can be in many forms, and yes, cell phones is a big
part of it. Lo and behold, a teenager is criticizing the use of cell
phones. I’m willing to bet that within the past week, or maybe even
day, you have used your phone to write a text while driving. That
doesn’t have to be done by hand, since we can now talk to our
phones and just say “Hey Siri, text Gabe” and then simply state
our message. How many of us glance down to check what it says? Simply
skimming for errors, right? Maybe you’re at a stop light, maybe
you’re on the interstate. Chances are most all of us are guilty of
it, no matter your age – as long as you have a smart device like an
iPhone. True, you can make the argument that it is just like talking
to the person in the passenger seat, and it is—almost, but not
quite. You don’t have to double check Siri when talking to Layla in
the passenger seat, but you do want to check what that lit up screen
says when you tell it what to type. That takes your eyes off the
wheel, and that opens the window for misfortune and mistakes. In that
time, someone could have walked into the street. That semitruck in
the lane next to you might have tried to merge into your lane, but
they couldn’t see you because of their blind spot. The car in front
might have had to slam on the breaks. Maybe the car in front wasn’t
paying attention and crashed into the car in front of them, and now
the wreck has three vehicles. When moving as fast as your vehicle,
taking your attention away can have countless consequences. Don’t
risk it.
