Driver
education is the single most important tool to decrease the number of
deaths resulting from car accidents. Educating the public,
specifically new drivers, ensures that the future generations of
drivers are more knowledgeable on the dangers of driving; therefore
in turn producing safer drivers. Continually making sure we educate
new drivers will create a safer driving environment, reducing the
number of deaths from driving accidents.

Impaired
and distracted driving are the single leading cause of reckless
driving. However, advancements are being developed to divert these
distractions back to the road where they belong. Cell phones now have
apps and settings that prevent the user from using them while
driving. New cars come installed with cutting-edge technology that
forces drivers to focus on the road and shuts off other distractors,
whether it be quieting the radio or sensors alerting the driver how
close they are to hitting something. Maps have voice features that
guide drivers towards their destination instead of forcing them to
focus on lines and colors when they should be paying attention to the
road.

While
car companies as well as software developers are pushing to create a
safer driving environment, laws are also being set in place to
enforce these measures. Illegal U-turns, reckless driving, driving
under the influence, and speeding are just the few driving hazards
that can land drivers with infractions on their license. In order to
enforce good driving habits and ultimately in turn reducing the
number of deaths of driving related accidents, these laws need to be
put in place and strongly implemented.

Thankfully,
I have never been in a driving accident personally. I have witnessed
first-hand several car accidents that scarred me and made me face the
reality that reckless driving can cultivate. Things can change in the
blink of an eye, and that is not something to take lightly. I have
seen people drive irresponsibly and sadly, their lives were forever
changed by their decision to be negligent.

A
driver is not only responsible for his or her own life, but
everyone’s life around them as well. I can take the steps to be a
safer driver by putting my phone away while I drive and never taking
my eyes off the road. Refreshing frequently on driving procedures not
only benefits my life but those on the road around me also. I always
make sure that I get in the car with only responsible drivers who I
know will do the best job of keeping my life safe on the road. The
moment you step into a car your entire life can change. Driving is a
privilege that should not be taken for granted. Anyone’s life can
be affected by reckless driving at any time, so let us make an effort
to end negligent driving.
