Practice
Driving safely. Not just for yourself but for others.

In
my family, it is a tradition that once you receive your permit, the
first step is to sign up for drivers ed. My dad has always
taught me from a young age that driving is a privilege. This has
always stuck with me and I began to see it my first day of drivers
education. The instructors teach you valuable information, ensuring
that you have all of the tools to be a good driver as well as knowing
the possible fatal effects an accident may have on you and the other
vehicle. This is a very productive way in helping students understand
why they should participate in smart driving as well as making sure
they do not participate in distracted driving, keeping the death toll
lower with new found knowledge.

Some
steps we can take to reduce accidents would be implementing more
drivers ed classes within schools as well as opening up the
conversation between young adults and victims of accidents. This will
help spread awareness to young people so that future generations will
learn driving safety.

Just
after I received my driver's license, I got into a car accident. I
wasn’t paying close enough attention to the driver in front of me
and unfortunately ended up hitting the back of their vehicle. When we
are young, some of us believe that we may be invincible or
untouchable. Many think that they will be the exception and won’t
have to deal with this type of accident. I was one of those people.
Since then, I have grown to understand that an accident may happen to
anyone at any time. We must educate young people with stories as this
will prevent new drivers from getting into similar accidents. I was
lucky to come out of this accident with only a mild concussion and no
injuries to the passengers in the other vehicle. Some are not that
lucky.

To
become a safer driver, I make sure to follow laws that many ignore. I
stay within the speed limit, stop at every stop sign, look through
every intersection thoroughly but most importantly, I tell my story
and spread awareness to friends and family about why it’s important
to practice safe driving.
