On average, more than 90,000 people a year die from motor accidents in the United States alone. This shocking statistic comes from a variety of different factors, such as intoxication, distracted driving, and inadequate knowledge of traffic or road laws. All of which are crucial aspects of driver education and can be easily avoided after completing a full course of driver's education. This brings to light both the dangers of driving and the importance of one's education in driving as a whole. However, simply understanding the dangers is not enough, and everyone should know the basics of their vehicle, their own capabilities, laws and road courtesy, and navigation and road signs. Along with this, the most important step by far is practicing under the supervision of someone with a license and complete knowledge of road safety. All of these help any driver grow their understanding with learning in a safe environment. Beyond just what a single person can do, there are plenty of other options when it comes to reducing the number of deaths related to driving. This includes an optional or mandatory retesting for a driver's license. There are plenty of reasons for someone to get retested including recent impairment, age, worry over one's inadequacy while driving, and transitioning to and from different types of vehicles, such as a manual transmission to an automatic or a small vehicle to a much larger vehicle. Recent impairment can come in many forms, whether it's physical like worsening eyesight or cognitive such as risk of stroke or developing vertigo, anything medically relevant to driving is grounds to get retested. Even something as simple as small spasms in the leg or painful cramping while driving should at least be investigated by a doctor if not simply made evident while retesting. Age is also a widespread worry when it comes to driving, as most chronologically related disablement can lead to serious harm not only for an older adult but for people in their surroundings as well. Age affects people both physically and cognitively, leading to weakened senses of sight, sound, and touch, slower reaction time, impairment of decision making capabilities, and risk of stroke and other related conditions. Not only this, but older adults are at higher risk of fatality if a collision were to occur, meaning it may be responsible of an older adult to receive help through public transportation or someone else driving them if options are available. Even if an older adult is driving rarely and only for short distances, it more than makes sense for them to get retested if their skill while driving is not up to snuff. If someone is not an older adult or suffering from impairment, it is still important to consider the capabilities and adequacy a person has when it comes to driving. This can contribute not only to someone's actual ability and knowledge of driving but also to their mental state, leading to states of heightened stress and anxiety. Poor decision making also stems from these states, potentially causing injury to one's self or others. Poor decision making also comes from vehicle transitions, meaning transitions from different styles or builds of car. This has already been proven important in ways such as needing CDL to drive semi-trucks, as not all vehicles drive the same. With all these possibilities in mind, it would likely be for everyone to retest at some point in their life if they took these warnings to heart. Before getting retested, as mentioned above, practice is incredibly important before even getting a license. It reminds me of a time when my mother was rear-ended while stopped at a red light. I was in the backseat when suddenly my head hit the driver's seat in front of me, but thankfully I was wearing my seatbelt, saving me from worse injury. Thankfully, no one was severely hurt and the young man who hit my mother's car apologized profusely before the police and insurance was called. However, I can not help but think how it could have all been avoided if the young man had practiced more before driving his car and inevitably hitting my mother's vehicle. That is why practicing under the supervision of a seasoned driver is critical to one's ability to safely drive a vehicle. This also gives way for someone who could fill the role as a seasoned driver to help those around them by offering both their advice and guidance before, during and after driving with someone who is seeking experience or practice driving. All in all, practice makes perfect, so be careful, be aware, and most importantly be safe.
