As someone who has done a lot of driving in recent years since getting my license, I believe I have a good outlook on the topic of safe driving. I completed all of the DriveSafe classes prior to my permit test, I attended a defensive driving class to practice specific safe driving, and I have driven for DoorDash over the past year, and completed over 200 deliveries. Driving is essential to life in America today, and safety needs to come first, especially for young drivers.

The DriveSafe classes I took were very helpful in learning how to drive safely. Although the classes were long, they were worth it. The classes taught general rules of the road, including meanings of signs, lines, and lights. All of these general knowledge things are very important. Everyone on the road needs to have the knowledge of the rules and regulations of the road in order to be safe in surprise situations.

The defensive driving class I took was very helpful in learning how to drive in rugged conditions. We were shown how to properly use all three of our mirrors when backing up; we weaved through cones backwards with an instructor in the car. Another great way we learned safe driving in tough situations was having to swerve out of a spin out. Water and soap is spread across a parking lot, and were told to speed up, turn into it, and then reverse your turn to get out of the spin. I won’t lie, it was pretty scary to think about doing, but every time I drive in the snow now, I am confident in swerving out of a spin out.

There have been times where I have had to get out of the car with a friend who isn’t driving safely. Driving is one of the most dangerous things we do every day, and I plan on continuing to choose to only be in the car with safe drivers. For my own life’s sake, I will make those tough decisions.

The safe driving classes, as well as the do it yourself defensive driving classes need to be required in order to get your license. If these classes are included in the process of acquiring a driver’s license, more new drivers will be prepared for the roads, and there will be less driving deaths.
